I dont think it will stop the fakes from overseas.

It seems logical and all, but that just means that counterfeiters wont counterfeit the modern date ase's moving forward, they'll still counterfeit previous years without the notch.

An effort to combat counterfeit coins. It will have some effect... for a while. Then, like all systems, the criminals will circumvent the effort. Then a new process will be developed. Cheers, RickO
I was and am skeptical that the notches will have much impact on counterfeiting, but then again many counterfeiters in the UK were tripped up by using the wrong reverse die and/or edge lettering for the date on the coin.
No doubt a few counterfeiters will get the notches wrong.
I'm just waiting to see if there will be any legitimate "wrong notch" errors.
only way to beat the fake coin market is a step nobody wants to take as it requires too much effort and time not to say would eat into profits

I think the USM want to do something about fakes, but this a very small step for mankind. They could just start giving away the coins.
