Anybody know what someone saw in this ugly gold dollar?

Sold for $984. I think it might be worth $200.

Could it be a proof?

    Who knows. Same coin but original and choice might sell for less. Some collectors appreciate dreck and will pay good money for it.

    I think it IS a proof. The reverse is exceptionally strong.

    I checked the diagnostics of the proof, and one indicater is the high point of the ribbon tip being right of center of the second 8 in the date. This coin does not meet that criteria. Pretty sure it is not a proof.
    Also, the exact coin just sold on Heritage a year ago for $384. This seller made a tidy sum. It does just take two to make some craziness happen.
