The grader(s) have determined that too much metal has been moved on the surfaces of this coin and deemed it to be damaged (98) AU Details. Everyone was very close to being right but none guessed 100% correctly.
How do you know the grader(s) have determined that too much metal has been moved on the surfaces of this coin?
On the reverse I see some rim damage on the right side and also some big digs that almost look like graffiti. But I have no idea what they saw. I question your explanation as they would frequently go with smoothed surfaces or altered surfaces.
@ColonelKlinck Just how do you figure that you " stumped the panel"??? There were several AU details guesses and a few more AU details cleaned guesses.

This is what they call code 98

Loads of people got AU details. The specific "no-grade" code doesn't matter too much - not to me anyhow.
BTW, if the graders think the coin has more than one reason to not get a grade, they'll just pick one, and put it on the label.
Whatever it is, it's a tough coin. I think that one would look nice in an XF-AU album set.
