$1 Morgan CC 65 DMPL Short Set (1880 - 1885)

The Morgan CC short set in this case is 1880 through 1885 (sometimes 1881 - 1885). These are all graded by PCGS as 65 dmpl and collected several years or more ago. None have been sent in for regrade/reconsideration and reside in an older holder. At the time I had the idea of doing a complete Morgan CC dmpl set. I did get a few other dates in dmpl and PL, however I had distractions to other collecting agenda and never completed it. But some of the other agendas, like the MS CC set, I prefer at this time. So sometimes distractions can turn out to be a good thing.

Photos were taken several plus years ago with two convention/show style lamps with incandescent bulbs. For reference below is a typical MS Morgan photo taken recently with similar lighting and the same old snap-o'matic camera. This shows the luster beams / cartwheel normally seen in the photos without the dmpl fields.

Recently I decided to try and do a crop, cut and paste, obverse-reverse side by side view. The editing software came with the camera, so it is 20 years old also, and is all manual (crop, size, rotate, positioning...). So there are some irregularities in location, size and 'roundness' or similar. It was an interesting task.
Note: After doing the crop thing, I then thought the holder photos looked better, maybe due to my snap-o'matic photo quality, so decided to include the holder photos also.

Definitely the toughest one of the CC short set in dmpl. This is because the 80CC has on average a more shallow mirror depth. Also the fields more often seem to come with a little haze . (and probably why the population is lower) Additionally the 80CC has the most striking issues or soft areas of the CC short set.
This one I believe a solid dmpl with some light cartwheel that can be seen in the photo. Strike is near full with some boldness missing in the eagles breast feathers. Cameo is average. Contact marks consistent with grade with the fields being fairly clean.

The 1881 CC through 1885 CC are in general similar in strike quality with some high point softness most often seen but it does vary of course. The 1881 CC seems to be the most consistent with more near full and/or bold strikes. Good cameo and mirrors can be found for all but it seems like the 83 CC and 84 CC are more often found with the extra deep mirrors (also the highest in dmpl population). These CC's can make for a nice looking Morgan.

The strike is near full (the photo does not show the full detail of hair over ear probably due to lighting but it is there) but a little lack of boldness in eagles breast feathers. A light reed contact mark on the eagles breast that shows more in the photo but in hand it is more difficult to discern. Solid dmpl but not extra deep as the light luster cartwheels indicate. Good plus cameo.

1882 CC 65 dmpl (Blue label early 'series' holder)
This one is my favorite of the group and some of that because it is 82CC. Extra deep mirrors and strong cameo with a near full and bold strike. KaBoom. Basically no field luster cartwheel. The coin is fairly clean for the grade also. The reverse 12 o/c marks are very light but glowing in the dmpl field. Most likely would not even notice on a normal MS.

Deep to extra deep mirrors with very light luster cartwheel and good cameo. Strike has some high point weakness over ear and eagle breast feather boldness. A good look. The frost breaks on the cheek show about right in the photo. That is a light 'halo' around the eagles head.

Extra deep mirrors and particularly the obverse and good cameo. Strike near full with typical high point softness. There are a few extra contact marks for the grade but chosen at the time for the mirror depth. A touch of color at edges and cheek that does not show in photo. Halo around eagles head.

The population on these is significantly less than prior two years. Deep to extra deep mirrors with very light luster cartwheel in fields. A good cameo but a little weaker on reverse. Strike has high point weakness on obverse. While contact marks are light there are some extra scattered ones.

Gorgeous coins! I like the write up for each one too. You picked out some nice black and white cameo examples. I agree that 80-CC is easily the toughest of these 6 and they do often have a weird haze (that is also similar in look to the 79-CC).

I did a similar short set (81-85) in 64DMPL about 19 years ago. I still have four of them but I upgraded my 83-CC to a 65DMPL.

Thanks and it sounds like you had/have some CC addiction also. Mine went a little deeper but am recovering some.

@lilolme I used to have a really nice group of silver dollars. Mostly Morgans. Sold them all around 30 years ago except for a few that I have in ANACS soapbars. Picked up a couple nice raw Peace dollars recently and also an MS 70 1917 Dan Carr Peace.

@lilolme... Very nice coins and pictures. The CC Morgan run intrigued me about 25 years ago and I completed the set (including the CC/O). They are not as nice as yours, but I still have them. Cheers, RickO

Interesting that you sold them all except a few. I am slowly dispersing these Morgans but I kind of had a CC addiction . After CC Anonymous I have been releasing some/many - a couple short sets, many GSA when the price went up, some duplicates and then the majority of the main Morgan set (registry). Still have a ways to go with dmpls, duplicates, raw album, toned and the main MS CC set. But right now not looking to get rid of all but I think I can slowly work it down some more.

Thanks for saying the pictures look okay. I am not a photographer and with all the amateur to pro photography here and the advanced set ups I just hope mine look okay. These were taken maybe 10 years ago and I can see I missed a couple things.

The camera is 20 years old now, automatic and only 2 MP. However, I have certainly got all my $ worth out of it. I bought it for outdoor photos and a couple years later thought maybe I could take some coin photos. The camera is tough also as it has survived many a hike mile and even dropped a few times. The 12X optical zoom was/is kind of cool but when not zoomed and on the flower I can get within about an inch or so of something and it will still focus. Oh, it has some buttons but except for white balance I just set it for auto and click. I am thinking about testing some buttons (thread? )

Hike trail photo showing how far one walks to go up the hill a little. Then the fun of the zoom - from none to full optical Then I just took a quick photo of a CC (only one light above it so that is why it goes from lit to not and is what it looked like).

@littlebear @TorinoCobra71 Thanks, most of the dmpl I kind of had to keep or so I thought. And yes the $ can go up on some. There are some other mint marks that have some that are quite the 'lookers'. Then some dates that just don't get there.
