Do you have it? It could have been cleaned all the way off.
Looks to me like either grease filled or struck through, followed by commerce wear. If seen new, the cause would likely be obvious, but wear has blurred the evidence. Cheers, RickO
Someone named Hal might have used a dremel type tool for a souvenir.

strike through or pmd but since i see strike throughs on these SO in frequently, especially big ones, i'll go with pmd from those images.

Looks like grease, but There looks to be some lines going across, indicative of monkey business.
