Dansco 7070 album - truly complete!

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,729 ✭✭✭✭✭

I actually completed the 7070 album I had some time back, but it didn't have the gold page. I bought that extra page over the last year and starting adding the gold coins to it. Over time, it was down to the last slot, the $20 St. Gaudens hole. Thanks to forum member @ajaan I was able to fill in the last slot with a nice looking 1924 $20 freed from an NGC MS-61 holder. That coin did look way better than a 61. For me, this was a great way to start 2023 - completing the 7070 type set with the gold page. It took about a decade, but it was a fun trip! Wondering how many other forum members have completed the 7070 withe the gold page?

I am REAL close to finishing my gold type set. Right now they are all in slabs, I'm just missing the $20 Liberty.
The dansco gold page is so stupid expensive, I refuse to pay that much so I'm patiently waiting to find one on the cheap.
Yours looks great and when I do find one for myself, I'll get to cracking. B)

I have assembled my 7070 a couple of times, but no gold, and I kept them in their PCGS holders.

    Really nice looking gold page!

    gratz.

i know a lot of people do raw coin collecting, even nice ones but affirmations like this post (and some others) still bring a smile to my face. certification has it's place but is not the end-all be-all. :)

Have The_Dinosaur_Man make you a page. He made me and several others a complete album, I'm sure he could make you a page that would match. Another member here makes albums also.

I completed my 7070 5 or so years ago (minus the gold page) and moved to the Intercept Shield album as it had more openings. I completed that one as well about about 2 years ago including the gold page. Will have to get pics of it up here some day to showcase.

I am now starting back on the original 7070 again here and there and hope to get my grandson to help me with it.

Edit to add: Many holders got cracked to make my set. Ended up taking the labels and taping them inside the front and back covers.

Man, when I opened your thread I wasn't even thinking gold page! I thought me 7070 was complete. The reality of "truly" completing a 7070, just hit me between the eyes! 😞 🙁

That's a beautiful page you have there. I really like the consistent look to all the coins. I can see the work you put into it. That's gotta be a great feeling! Congrats!! 👍🏻 👍🏻

Wow! Wonderful accomplishment there! The whole page looks fantastic, as do the other gold pages posted in the comments. I'm intrigued that Dansco left out the Type 2 gold dollar and the $3 piece. How snug are the coins sitting in the page?

Cracking coins from slabs can be tough, but for me if there's a hole in the page the book's not complete. ;)
My type album has several holes not included with the 7070. To date I have one hole left, the one dollar gold type 2.

Nice going. All the best to you in completing the set soon. :)
I got this very page first since the Dansco gold page was being hawked on fleabay for over a hundred bucks, but eventually managed to land one cheaper that was matching with the rest of the 7070.

Wow... beautiful coins! I especially like the toning on your $10 Indian. I'm still a few coins away from completing the base set, and I'll likely do gold as part of a Box of 20. I felt a bit squeamish cracking out a Seated Liberty Dollar so I'm going to keep my gold in holders...

Very nice. I would love to see the rest of the set.

Finally able to post. Thanks for all the props! I bought my 7070 at a show for 15 bucks used. It was only last year that I picked up the gold page. Yes I paid 45 bucks for it but it seemed ok since I didn't pay that much for the original album. I'll work on posting the other pages another time, this truly was a fun set to complete.

As for the gold coins, I bought some of the smaller denominations raw at shows or here on the BST. The $20 Liberty I busted out of an NGC MS-62 slab - I paid $400 for that coin many years ago. The 1907 Indian I bought raw at a local show from Larry Cundari, it really jumped out to me since it was the first year for that type and it did have some nice toning. I busted some of the other non-gold coins out of slabs too, and I kept the labels. They are tucked into the album. The holes for the gold coins are for the most part a bit loose, except for the $20's. I did find it peculiar that there wasn't a spot for a type 2 gold dollar or a $3 dollar gold piece. This is one set that can be shown to non-collectors, they are truly surprised over the variety of coins we minted, especially the odd denominations.

The key word here is "complete". Every time I open my album I find another piece that needs to be upgraded. There is no light at the end of this tunnel.

Have given up on upgrades for now because of not being able to find higher grades in the budget that has to worked with because of strict ground rules stipulated by my late wife about gold coins not to cost more than a marginal mark up over spot. o:)

My dilemma was more like, I transitioned from raw coins to slabbed and then having to revert back to cracking the slabs to fill in my Dansco. Talk about being caught between the devil and the deep sea.

Don't feel bad. Between you and me, 80% of my Dansco has been broken out. Please keep that under your hat. I don't advertise that very often. I took it to a coin club several years ago, to compare it with other members 7070's.

You should have seen the looks I received after pointing out the coins I had broken out. The looks on their faces was precious! You would have thought I murdered someone! 🤣 😂 They all agreed... Apparently it was sacrilegious for me to do that! I just laughed! 😂 What do they know. 🤣 😂

The really cool thing about finishing the gold page is that you can feel how heavy it is. This is something that has gotten a bit lost in the slab era.
