It was time to open this baby up. The gum is still awesome! Found a decent Morgan and a Craig Nettles. Lol.

Last pic of the 2 Reggie's. Fun rip. Nothing for grading but wasn't expecting anything!
I just opened a couple vendings I had over the weekend. Such a weird set with some awful photography, but also nice due to the simplicity of the set. Centering is generally terrible, but there are several worth grading if you can get perfect cards. Big 'if'.
I also like to open the 81 Donruss, but those wax boxes are always horrible because the gum was the worst. I've seen packs where the gum has seeped through 3 cards.
Yeah I won't rip 81 D again for that exact reason. My last box was so bad I had to send Steve H pictures and even he was even laughing about it. It was like looking at stolen money from a bank - just color bleed everywhere.
I might have to Rip some 81 Fleer. That's the first stuff I dug into back in 1981.
How did the gum taste?
I collect hall of fame rookie cards, https://www.instagram.com/stwainfan/
Did you use a razor blade to line out the ricin like dust that comes in those packs and snort it ? 🤠
The gum wasn't bad, but, as an unopened pack gum connoisseur, I knew that going in.
My all time fave are 1980 Super cello and 83 Topps. 1982 Topps was good in 82, but it hasn't aged well.
Perhaps you can be the Steve1989MRE of ripped baseball pack gum?
Let's get this on a tray.....nice!
And I do have a soft spot for 81 Fleer, Donruss and Topps. A uniquely exciting year to be a young collector.
Edit - Steve1989MRE is a YouTube channel. He collects military meals ready to eat (MREs). He opens them and, as long as he is confident he won't get botulism, eats them, drinks the tea/coffee/powdered drinks and smokes the cigarettes. He has gone back as far as about 1900. He's done multiple WW2, Korean War era and Vietnam era rations, as well as many different countries' military rations from the last 30 years.
The guy has (iron) guts. Oddly fascinating.
You got a Craig Nettles and a Graig Nettles in the same box?
Yes. The Gregg came first, then the Craig few packs later. Is that unique?
I probably ripped 20 boxes of 81 F back in the day and I don't recall every finding a Craig before!
Perhaps some sort of Frankenbox? It's vanishingly possible that your box was assembled at the exact minute of the changeover, but very unlikely.
Wow that's fascinating. The box did seem light a lot of stars so maybe it was a Frankie..
I bought a large collection of what was basically junk" 5K boxes on facebook marketplace. It was cheap and fun to go though, not much to pluck out, but there were lots of stars. I think the guy mainly pulled the hottest RCs and that was about it. There was some basketball and it looked like Jordans were mostly pulled, but did find a few cheaper ones.
Anyway, there was a 3200 box with 81 Fleer and I quickly realized that this had a lot of the errors in it, in quantity. Sometimes 8-9 of each. They have really dropped off in price, probably because they aren't extremely rare (not sure, never gave it much thought after the 80s). It was fun to fun to find in what was otherwise 90s/00s stuff and reconnect with the errors. Several of the hand/finger cards, wrong numbers, reverse negatives. A lot of these I have never owned, mainly because I really didn't care enough.
No Nettles variations, probably since that was once the big dog of the set. There was at least 1 each of Baines, Gibson and Valenzuela included, along with the biggest stars (Ryan, Henderson, Seaver, Jackson, Brett, Schmidt). Makes me wonder what was pulled, if anything.
