Heat damage+ or some sort of die strike problem?

Poking around on this forum, I suspect heat damage and some rather rough handlings are the reasons for the damage on this coin, but I thought it best to have the experts weigh in. Is this some sort of intentional damage, or some really bad minting experience for this coin?

not like any error i've seen from the mints.
That is not a mint error.... physical damage and heat damage... all Post Mint. Cheers, RickO
This is what I refer to as a BATH coin: Beaten All To Hell.
Post mintage damage (PMD). Either heat or it spent some time in a corrosive environment. Is it possible that someone with a metal-detector found it at the beach? Salt water can be corrosive on metals.

Thanks all for the inputs and info. One of the fun things about coins is there are always more unusual things to see and so much to learn.
