Library addition

One of my newest additions to my personal library. I’m sure any collector of bust dollars will appreciate Harry’s work. But don’t be deterred from purchasing a copy if you do not collect dollars. There is a vast amount of numismatic knowledge contained between the covers. Harry is best known for editing the Early American Coppers society’s newsletter, Pennywise. Membership in the society is repaid with the knowledge Harry imparts in his introduction to each issue.

A shameless plug for Harry but I’m sure anyone purchasing the book will be numismatically rewarded. It is available from the author for $145 postpaid. Orders go to Harry Salyards POB 1691, Hastings NE 68902.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

I received my copy last week and have been enjoying it tremendously. As BustDMs stated, it is a great update to the Draped Bust, Small Eagle dollar series, but it goes well beyond that. Harry researched deep into the global economic state of the time period, the political upheaval both in the US and abroad, the civil unrest, and statements made by Mint and political leaders that would influence coinage designs. He also debunked some myths with extensive research.

I own or have borrowed and read virtually all books about 1792-1807 US Mint coinage, and I believe Eagle Poised on a Bank of Clouds: The United States Silver Dollars of 1795-1798 to be the most important.

That looks like a worthy addition to any numismatic library. Thanks for the information. Cheers, RickO
