At the risk of slight thread drift -- with complete respect for the idea of why a collector would want to do this, I do have to wonder how many "Box of 20" collectors don't also have some kind of side-project / B-list / farm-team type of collection(s) going.
Personally, I've really tried to winnow out the "just stuff," odds-and-ends, pretty-impulse-purchase kind of thing, and then not to acquire it in the first place, but isn't it somewhat an endemic feature of this hobby to have some weird little accumulations of peripheral material and esoterica going, almost no matter what you do? That's been my experience anyway.
I have a box of 20. It hasn’t contained my collection at all and gave me an excuse to buy cool coins that don’t necessarily otherwise fit in - tokens, ancients, world, sentimental pieces, etc.
To me, it was salvation from way too many "why the hell did I ever buy THAT" moments. Once the box gets full, buying a new coin becomes a matter of also deciding what coin has to be let go. I find it to work very well for me, it provides focus I never had before. I've never regretted not buying something, because I ended up keeping something I like better. Disclaimers: Be aware that you may eventually find yourself forced to go to two boxes of twenty. Results may vary.
A box of 20 is a limit that people place on the number of coins they own in order to keep themselves only buying quality coins. This box usually contains approximately 30 to 40 coins
I think there are as many approaches to this as collectors. My box of 20 is basically an extension of my Type set... coins not present in a standard 7070. I've got a mix of 18th Century type and gold by denomination... I even have a California fractional in mine... as I said, there's no standardization...
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
It’s part of an investment strategy that’s based on the premise that the best coins have the most potential. But it doesn’t make much sense from the perspective of a pure collector.

I am doing the "Box of 20" idea for my Australian collection. It stops me buying coins I don't like. And also stops me from starting a new series that I'd have to complete. But it's already two "Boxes of 20".
I can unashamedly state that I don't have the discipline or desire to do a Box of 20 collection at this time, as I watch the number of coins in my registry inventory tick ever upward.

"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
Thank you. I think that answers my question.
To me, it is a way of limiting one's collection to an arbitrary quantity of exceptional coins. Cheers, RickO
