What is your take on this odd 1921 Peace dollar?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,179 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not my coin. This is either an interesting coin or a damaged one.
I'd like your opinion on it.
Here are the seller's photos:

WAG- two coins machined to fit together, obverse inside reverse.

Looks like a bad fake to me, but I'm certainly not an expert.

Agree, it looks like a magician's coin:

Am I missing something? It looks like a 1921 Peace dollar to me.

It looks a little out of collar? A misaligned die strike? I'm not really, really good at this, now, so...

It appears to be an opium dollar.

I think it is a real 21Peace dollar with either damage in minting process or PMD to edge. The wear, toning and strike appears to be alike on both sides. It will be interesting to see what comes to light.

  • My first thought was extreme finning on the rim, but I'm pretty tired right now so I could be wrong.

Well, I now own it, so we'll see what happens.

Can you give us an end-on photo of the rim?

There was no description of the coin on the auction?

I'll take a guess and say that it is a solid coin with either damage or a normal coin with strange lighting. If it was an opium dollar then it would be more obvious and crude.

The funny thing is I actually cherrypicked the coin posted by slider23. I first noticed the seam when the lid was closed on the auction photos. It is hard to miss, that is why I think the peace dollar isn't an opium box.

But whether or not I am correct, I really want to see the outcome. Keep us updated!

interesting dollar, edge not really matching wear and reverse die crack or scratch

Very odd auction. The seller has lots of photos of the strange edge but does not mention it at all in the text.

Spy coin? Photo coin? Magicians coin? Does it open up?

Cannot reach any conclusion from the provided pictures... but it does look strange. Hope to see more when @braddick receives the coin. Cheers, RickO

Yes, odd how he didn't mention or add additional information in the description.
