If it's to good to be true it usually is but....

Do you have any of these coin stories to share?
I watched this coin last night end. I even bid on it knowing their is a 99.9% chance it's fake. It sold for $760. I was the under bidder knowing full well I could return it as per ebay counterfeit rules. This is definitely one of those TGTBT but moments for me.
Have you ever had one and been successful?
Please elaborate. I think it will make for interesting conversation. Pictures always help spice things up!

You won't find a real 1792 half disme for anywhere near the money you bid.

Yes, but the events would perhaps be embarrassing to people who sometimes visit here so I won't share them.

Like I said 99.9% sure it's a fake. That's blatant fraud in my eyes.

I would be concerned with the seller.

    Somebody just loaned him $760.

Hope he still around when the buyer wants to return the coin.

Why would you bid on a coin you are sure is fake? There are ways the return could go wrong.

For about two years, I pretty much owned the coin market on Craigslist in the local Sacramento area. It may sound strange, but I found so many deals that I told my family "if it is too good to be true, then it isn't."

    Couple examples:
    1. An El Cazador 8 reales was listed for $25. I pulled up downtown and the lady grabbed the coin from inside her bra handed it to me. I sold the coin for $100.
    2. I bought a sterling plate containing five ounces of silver from the first garage sale (found on CL) of the day for $1.
    3. An ad with no photos and a simple description saying "coin collection for sale $5,000." I bought it for $4k and kept a lot of neat stuff, while breaking even overall.

Lesson learned, if it is on Craigslist, then it isn't too good to be true. Elsewhere, perhaps it is...

Except they also have arrested people for selling counterfeit gold on Craigslist.

This forum is proof that to good to be true seems to skip over here.
The incredible amount of knowledge given freely. Absolutely amazing.
And I’ve heard about how, those giveaways never have good stuff. Tell that to the 2 gold escudos that now reside in my collection. Free gold and not the first time this has happened to others as well. Those who have been around for awhile can verify that indeed there’s an exception to the rule alive and well right here.
Just this one more thing. There’s many formites who give a fellow member coins of interest and in some cases a coin needed for a spot in the “hole” in their series.
Too good to be true does exist, sometimes 😀
