"Golden dollars" of all designs have a delicate window in circulation. Once they are handled they need to keep getting handled until they develop a protective tarnish. After that they're fine.
If they don't get continuous handling at the beginning, then any salts or oils will compromise the surface quickly (and permanently).
I once manually "circulated" a presidential dollar until it developed a tarnished brass color with light highlights on the high points. It was very nice looking.
