Who wins ?

It’s actually very close.

I need the math wizards to figure it out.
Everyone else can guess.

Speed skater. Record for 1500 meters is just over 1:40. Speed skater would do even better on same track as horses.

I doubt it, he'd have trouble getting traction in the dirt. :D

I suspect that if the speed skater skated a mile or 1,500 meters and the horse ran a mile or 1,500 meters in a straight line instead of an oval track their respective speeds would be faster than their speeds on an oval track.

Do any of you math/physics folks know is my suspicion is correct or incorrect? (Does the centrifical force that arises going around an oval curve accelerate the speed skater and horse coming out of the curve?)

Do you know what the record is for the fastest mile for a horse is ?

    Is 1500m a mile, or under a mile ?

It's not all that close. The 1500m record for speed skating is 1:40. That's 0.932 miles. So a mile would be 1:45-1:50. A horse is around 1:36 in the mile. So the horse wins by at least 9 seconds. A 1:45 mile is 50.28 ft/sec. So a 9 second win would be 452 ft - 1-1/2 football fields. So , yeah, not close.

Incidentally, the mile record for a horse is 1:31, so another 5 seconds (251 ft) margin.

    You’ve done quite well.

The only thing you left out is how much time a speed skater loses on the turns, which there are 3 and 3/4 laps in a 1500m race.

It gets it closer. Much closer.

If they go on dirt the horse wins, ice, the skater DESTROYS the horse.

    Easy one.
