Noob needs help

I came across this 1988 penny and need help identifying these marks. As I stare at the last 8 on the year I swear I see a 7 under that 8. Any help would be appreciated also thank you for allowing me to join this forum.

Most of what you are seeing is post mint damage. I see what you are looking at for the second 8 over a 7. The staining on the coin in that area makes you see a seven. There are many posts about the effect. Welcome to the forum.

I see what you are talking about, but it looks like a combination of the discoloration and the hits to the metal on the top of the 8 making it look squared off that make it resemble a 7. But it doesn’t look like a mint made 8 punched over a 7 to me. It’s just that the metal is malleable and can get hits that cause it to look that way.

@Hightower80 ... Welcome aboard. What you are seeing is Post Mint Damage (PMD) and staining. No numismatic premium. Very good pictures. Cheers, RickO

Welcome. Don’t clean it whatever it is. Please appreciate the sincere answers, tolerate light ribbing, hang around, read and be levitated numismatically.
