Before and after (Follow up on “Cleaning”)

I recently put one of my large cents into olive oil for a couple days. I just took it out and dried it. Do you like the results or should I put it back in for a bit. Thank you!

Since those pictures are 'before' and 'after', it does appear improved. Need focused close up shots to determine if it needs more work. Cheers, RickO
My experience with olive oil soaking is it usually takes months to get good results.

You need to penetrate the verdigris. I’ve soaked some rusty Romans for years.
Put it back in for 30 days, flip it over on day 15.

The olive oil started going bad, so I thought I’d better take it out. I guess I’ll put it in when I buy some more.

@Ownerofawheatiehorde.... Thanks for the new - and improved - pictures. That coin needs a lot more soaking.... Cheers, RickO
It’s working, but like the others mentioned it needs a lot longer of a soak in oil to really get the verdigris off of the coin. I like to use mineral oil instead of olive oil because it’s even more inert than olive oil. I like to just put 5he coin in a small glass jar with the oil in it, close the jar and put it away somewhere it won’t get knocked over and forget about it for several months. But I’ve also heard you should change out the oil if you notice a bunch of crud floating around if you notice that.

I was about to ask why people use olive oil rather than mineral oil. Seems mineral oil is also an option judging by your statement.

Olive oil has some some mild acids in it that help eat the corrosion. Think of it as a slow moving dip.
In my experience, putting a lid on the Oo will keep it from getting funky. Gotta soak it for a month or more. Forget about it and work on something else. Good luck. Peace Roy
