Trade Dollar with lots of sentimental value

My father-in-law passed away a few years ago. He was born in 1926 and when he turned 18 he enlisted in the Merchant Marines. He spent most of the next two years on a Liberty ship in the boiler room traveling across the Atlantic and Pacific. When he was in the South Pacific he found this trade dollar. I always found it odd that the coin doesn’t have any chop marks. The coin always looked real to me but I submitted it to ANACS for confirmation when they had a ten for $100 special which included return shipping.
In 2019 Merchant Marines who fought during WW2 were recognized as combat veterans. If anyone is interested the SS Jeremiah, one of two remaining Liberty ships, is moored at Pier 45, Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco.

Nice $. Been looking for a nice circulated example to add to my collection, Are you from SF? Love that city. Lived there from 68-70 while in USCG.
Very nice Trade Dollar.... I like them, and like the chop marked ones as well. Mine is an 1874 CC XF45. Cheers, RickO
Great story. My dad brought back an Australian crown, now slabbed. He spent WWII in the engine room of the destroyer Bagley in the Pacific. Settled in SF, where I was born. Next time I visit home I'll check out the Jeremiah. Best generation, dangerous work.
Great looking circ. Trade dollar!
Beautiful Trade Dollar without the story, that only adds to it's looks. Glad you held on to it. My dad was a B-24 Bomber Pilot in WWll and brought home a small box full of coins to which my older brother took them to a store and spent them. Never saw them again.

Great Trade $1 and great story - that’s a keeper. Thanks for sharing it!
That is very well struck for a 77-P. Great story and keepsake.
nice coin and even better story!

That is a cool coin and I'm glad you got it encapsulated. Cherish it for sure.

A great looking Trade Dollar, and an important family heirloom. Now protected for future generations. WWII merchant marine sailors were really unsung heroes.
Very nice 45.
Perfect example!

The wife and I visited my mom and stepdad a couple years ago. They live in the valley. Used to always love going to S.F. Wharf all the time. This last time we went, homeless defacating and urinating in the streets and panhandlers everywhere. Will never go back there again. It has really deteriorated over the years. Sad!!

Thanks for sharing this Trade Dollar and the historic story behind it. My late father was a Captain on a Liberty ship. He was a graduate of the Maritime Academy at Vallejo, California. He served in WWII. One of the ships he was on was torpedoed by a German U Boat. Some of his fellow crew members were lost but the vessel did not sink. I agree, the Merchant Marines serving onboard Liberty ships played an important role for the Allies in WWII. Thanks to a change in regulations, I was able to have his ashes buried at sea under full military honors.
Great story.
