Need help with potential Morgan dollar error

maymay Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭✭✭

The last hair curl is missing on the 1878, the 1921 is for a example of a normal one. Is this a VAM? Thank you!

All Morgans have a VAM. VAM's are just die pairings.

So yes, that's a VAM. Overpolished hair would be a good place to start.

    I doubt it's worth a premium.

Yes, it is a VAM. www.vamworld.com would be the best place to figure out which one it is.

Good pictures, no doubt about the area in question. Cheers, RickO

Thank you, I knew something was fishy when I saw it. Does it subtract value?

Whether it affects value will be determined on a couple questions?

Is it a scarce or rare VAM?
    Condition?

    Determine the die marriage.
Match the obverse die with the reverse die.

You can think of it as husband and wife.
Could be more than one mate for either.

    Fewer known the better.
Distinguishing characteristic... Hot Lips, Scarface etc...

The 1878 is an 1878-S. It is from the 78-S VAM-17 series that has several different die states.

You can't compare any 1921 morgan with another year morgan for any reason. 1921 had a different design and looks so different than the previous years.

Successful BST with ad4400, Kccoin, lablover, pointfivezero, koynekwest, jwitten, coin22lover, HalfDimeDude, erwindoc, jyzskowsi, COINS MAKE CENTS, AlanSki, BryceM

It was just to show a non-special coin for comparison. That area did’t change.

A "Splitshplot" - no added value - especially with the vast magnification!

Spend some time at VAM World site. You'll learn a lot if you have an interest in Morgan's

As a word of clarification, an error is a one-off that occurs to a specific coin during the minting process. A variety is in the die, so many coins will have it. A VAM or the 1955 doubled die cent are varieties. A clip or off-center are errors.
