XF-40-45 scratches on reverse and nose/eye area may have given details grade, was it previously mounted? or in a bezel.

AU details Obv and Rev scratches. Although I believe the obv scratch might be the holder.

I really doubt the scratches are on he holder. And these scratches as such, when like this, are usually referred to as
gouges. I have seen many scratches on the holder, some quite deceptive, and ones that look like this are on the coin
itself. ( I am referring to the scratches at 8 o.clock on the reverse)

AU Details. Scratches on the left side of the reverse, that bison is eating something in the wind! Most obverse scratches are on the holder, one on the coin coming down from the bridge of the nose.

I would call that AU details... also looks as if the obverse die was rusted. Cheers, RickO

I think AU details. The scratch is unfortunate but otherwise seems like a decent coin if offered at the right price. I think you are being a little overly dramatic about it.

AU details. Without the marks probably a 58.

I’m sure there’s a market for this coin at the right price. If you were doing the late dates in AU/Unc in an album on a budget, it may work for you.

How can this not have "details" grading?

two biggie gouges below the buffs face

and obvious rub on the bisons hip/flank. graders musta been asleep at the switch when
this one chugged thru! the grading line!

Is that what they call market acceptable?

Interesting! Obviously (from my guess), I'm on board with the "MS" part, but I'm surprised that their compromise was "60" rather than "details." Maybe the grader(s) figured that there actually were relatively few marks, and it was well struck, so they down-graded its level to avoid giving it a "details" grade.

  • MaywoodMaywood Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭✭✭

I would have said Unc. details/scratches. Since these were struck from over-polished die(s) they often have soft detail and appear always to be over-graded. At least that's what I've learned and seen.

  • erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,088 ✭✭✭✭✭

Would this be an example where certain rarities get a pass when grading?

  • BUFFNIXXBUFFNIXX Posts: 2,718 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think you could argue the case for MS or AU/UNC but no way should it be straight graded because of the gouges
which are not scratches to me but rather gouges.

    Details scratched.
    MS60? Ok.
Straight grade? No freaking way... and good luck trying to sell it.

    When in doubt, don't.

Okay, now we know what the holder says. At what price, if any would you be inclined to purchase this coin? For me it would have to be in $600 to $700 range and even then I would think long and hard before I pulled the trigger. There are some many 3 legs out there.

Yeah, that's always the question with compromised coins, isn't it? I've never found a "formula" I'm comfortable with, when given the opportunity to buy a "details" coin that looks pretty nice, in a higher grade than I would be looking at with a problem-free coin.

So I have not bought, and don't think I ever would buy, a compromised coin. But I suspect your estimate is pretty good.

I cannot imagine any true buff nut buying this one for their herd unless the price was really low. How low is anyones
    guess!

here is an example of a high grade buff with wear on the hip, flank, and tail. As wear progresses these three areas
merge and form a flat "triangle". This one would grade AU58

And another one that poses as an UNC as per its owner. This one also looks to be cleaned.
