Top one for sure! Less wear clearly and the perfect color!
I would prefer the 1st after a 3-6 month soak in olive oil to remove as much of the grime as possible. The second appears to have been cleaned to me and has a washed out look to it and considerably more wear evident in the hair. JMO

I like A- it's the higher grade piece and I like the look of the date on this particular die pair. Not crazy about the crud in the protected areas but perhaps an acetone bath might ameliorate that. Second coin is OK for the grade but looks somewhat lifeless by comparison, plus it has more marks in the field.

I'd be happy with either one but if choosing between the 2, I would go for the slabbed one. As @jesbroken mentioned, the surfaces do not quite seem to be original on the second one, not to mention it's probably 10-15 grade points lower than the first.
Theres nothing wrong with the lower grade (I have many in my collection that look very similar) but in this instance I'd choose the higher one, I assume it is straight graded?

I think I like A better, though the lighting makes it hard to really see it, especially the reverse. But it’s got sharp detail and seems to have nice skin.
I have no issues with the B coin either, it’s just a little lower grade, but looks like honest wear and no problems. Also I’m a poor judge, as I’d like pretty much any 1840 large cent that doesn’t have a hole in it!
Coin A. Definitely looks more lustrous.

My opinion from these photos is for coin A, I might make a different choice after an in-hand look.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I like the odd looking date punches. I see thats the large date variety. I like the first one because it looks to be more original.
First coin looks better to me.

1 per your pics.
Thanks everyone, yes... Coin A definitely has better details. Basically a nice XF. Whereas Coin B is a decent VF for details. I was wondering more about surfaces and color...

I know that the first one is going for twice the money of the second one, I would choose the first and the only problem I'd have with it is that it'd be the best graded large cent I'd own and it'd make my others look too worn out and then I'd be doing more upgrading to a bunch of others, and so on and so forth. Decisions, decisions. One thing I know that you gotta trust your gut and go for the ones that you like, because they won't be for sale tomorrow, they'll be gone.

Edited to add an example- I was one mouse click away from this one last night, but it would've been the first slabbed details coin in my collection and that's what kept me from doing it last night. When I went to find it tonight it was sold. Damn!
Definitely the first coin.... More detail. Even with the dark picture, it is the better quality coin. Cheers, RickO
I didnt want to say anything about an ongoing auction... but, yeah... now that those auctions are over... the coin A was about twice the money of Coin B but also about 15-20 points higher in grade. Coin A's color almost looked too good and I was concerned that it might have been recolored. I've got some "higher end" LCs in my collection (a few XF-AU) but I also have G4 and 6 coins too. As long as the surfaces are clean and not corroded with excessive contact Mark's, and the color looks good... it's fair game. Coin B is more in keeping grade-wise for the rest of the date-run I'm doing, but as some suggested, I think it might have been cleaned long ago and there is a light scratch on the reverse that was a little off-putting... but it was literally half the price.
I ended up going in a different direction anyway... thanks all!

I like the top one. It like. It wasn't messed with to me, jmo
