Interesting 1851 Large Cent...Rim Clip..severely worn dies.

Rim clip at 2 o'clock. The left foot of the first 1 is gone. The top of the 8 is open and the top of the 5 is detached. I am guessing very late state N-26. I can find no description in Grellman for the digits being in this condition. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

The opposite side of a rim clip is affected by what is called the Blakesley Effect. This would explain the first 1's aberration.

Keep looking - the digits do not line up with the N-26 variety.

Nice looking copper cent..... Though graded BN, there are some red highlights there. Cheers, RickO

I would have said the Blakesly effect is evident by the softly struck rim and dentils, S1 to S2, not the weak date numerals.

I agree, Lance, but I thought perhaps with the insufficient metal flow caused by the Blakesley Effect it might have affected the 1 also. I stand corrected. Thanks.

    Gotcha, Jim. Who knows.

My guess is if the date numerals were affected by Blakesly then the rim and dentils below them would also be.

The weak 18 in the date is more likely due to grease. Or a planchet irregularity -- note the corresponding weakness, upper reverse, in AT of STATE.

My first thought was N-15, this one is tough because of the late die state/mushy details

The position of the digits does not match the N-15, either. Two down and only 43 more varieties to go. ;)

@IkesT I like to think I am pretty good at attributing late dates and hate having to resort to DRN for the attribution. N-15 and N-26 use the same obverse die paired with a different reverse. The 1 and 8 are right but the 5 does not match. I will take another swing at this and say N-38. The DRN for N-38 is 775375. It is a R1 variety so it's not like it wouldn't show up and Grellman notes some later examples have severely weakened 8 and 5 and that on the reverse there is supposed to be a barely visible point down from the top left of E in CENT in late die states as the only marker. I would bet Bob never saw one in this late a die state with no markers on the reverse.

It is definitely not the N-38, either - the digits are not in the right place.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a trivial task to go through all 45 varieties - that's why I haven't offered to do it, myself! ;)
