Odd Brazilian Counterstamped coin newp

I picked this 1828 BRAZIL 40 Reis (counterstamped over 80) up and received it today. Interesting. Haven't spent research time on it yet, but I will. Anyone with information as to why it was done would be appreciated. If they took an 80 Reis and counterstamped it to become a 40 Reis, wouldn't that defeat any benefit as to the value due to the amount of copper difference. Just curious.

A coin from their currency revaluation. Lots of them around.
It's truly large for a copper coin. 39 mm compared to a 38 mm Morgan Dollar. Yeah there are plenty of them on ebay.

I have a few. A big chunk of copper.
I have one that looks and is dated exactly like that one that my grandfather dug up in his garden on Long Island.
That is one powerful counterstamp.... Wonder what the pressure was on that one. Cheers, RickO
I've been wanting to get one of those, but they seem to go quickly.
Nice one.

I have a rather special one on the way. A State of Para counterstamp, 10 revalued from 40.
