Are you certain it's a scratch and not a mint-made anomaly? I ask because it looks like it could go either way from the image. Regardless, it's still one heck of a nice looking coin.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
it looks pretty scrap-ie in-hand.
that being said, it just may be worth the risk.
appreciate your insight!
edited to add: ya, it is one heck of a boomer to be sure. not sure what it takes for near top pop or top pop for coins in this era but it kinda makes ya start thinking like that. fwiw
i'm on the road today i sure hope i get to come back and see some heart breakers!
Tiny die crack on the reverse at the A. Nice quarter. Cheers, RickO
Now here's pareidolia. Look directly above the DO on the vine. Two die scratches and the vine make an A that would entice many beginners.
Not sure the hair is struck well enough to warrant sending in, but not a modern coin guy so whatever you think is what you should do.

Here's my heart breaker. Not the best photo, but a beautiful 1976-D triple struck Cent on the reverse, until it's turned over.
I knew there were some fine, toned over scratches on the forehead, but I didn't take them that seriously until I scanned the coin. They hurt the appearance of an otherwise nice midgrade Lincoln commemorative.
OUCH!!

Here's my OUCH factor. I've had this one for years. Don't even know there I got. Someone suggested it may have been used as a button years ago. Not sure if there are die markers identifying an S-VDB.

I got this as part of a lot.
I can't see it (although I'm not very experienced in details grading,) but NGC says it's cleaned.

ya, i think the problem is that the 09-s vdb and 09-vdb share similar reverses so that almost rules that out. i imagine the obv is fairly pup-less.
BUT, i've seen stranger things done. all depends just how dedicated you are to the cause!
i think the first thing i'd do is get a close-up of the date/mm area and compare the hole to the known mm positions to see if one of them fits perfectly in the hole or if they are all offset enough from the hole to rule out the 09-s vdb.
Prob some of the best steps I've seen on a 1953-S Nickel with a nick that is just heartbreaking.
I get what you feel!
This recently "broke my heart" when I received them back. My dual

Strike-Throughs from NGC.
One came back straight
MS 66
The other "Detailed" w/ scratch.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.you didn't know that going into the submission that quarter with the rather large focal area scratch would go details?
it kinda looks like a botched assassination attempt resulting in a graze wound!
OK, a heartbreaker many wouldn’t mind owning (and I sure don’t mind), but here’s my “Ash Wednesday” Half Cent.
I bought it as a 64RD w/CAC, but despite the attention grabbing carbon spot, I liked it so much, I sent it back to PCGS via Reconsideration. Apparently, they really liked it too, since they changed their mind from their original decision when first grading it that this coin specifically did not merit a plus, to now making it MS64+RD. It automatically got the CAC sticker reapplied.
Wouldn’t it really be great without that carbon spot?
