LOC Album Slides

Does anybody else clean theirs?

I am a fan of these albums and buy gently used ones frequently and even the gently used albums have filthy slides - coin imprints, schmutz, fingerprints and dirt embedded in the hairline scratches.

I fill a shallow Pyrex dish with hot tap water and a squeeze of Dawn (look, if you’re a Polmolive dude then you do you) ‘cause that’s what’s on the kitchen sink. Then I drop the slides in the warm soapy mix, swoosh ‘em about - maybe run fingers over them if they’re especially spotted - and pat dry. Before I reinsert them I will run a lens cloth over ‘em.

Cleaning 60+ year old slides makes a night and day difference in how your album pages look.

You too or, am I just a weirdo?

Yes, I've cleaned several but you do a better job than I do. Couple of times I thought the coin in the album was cleaned when it was the slides themselves being very dirty and probably lightly scratched from dry wiping.

@Eighteen63 ... Good work... and likely your diligence prevents (in some cases) damage to the coins you place in the album. Those dirty slides, scraping across the coins, will leave hairlines or worse. Cheers, RickO

I have cleaned several of mine, but mostly as needed, not regularly. It does make a difference.

That’s a good idea. I never cleaned slides, but for my Wayte Raymond/Meghrig albums, I wipe down the binder covers with a little bit mineral oil on a paper towel or they tend to grow mildew spots. The oil makes them look new and it absorbs in and doesn’t leave them greasy

Jim, how do you clean them? Do you wipe them down with a cloth or do you use soap & water?
I only clean slides in my new acquired albums, it’s not like I spring-clean ‘em annually….yet.

Nothing weird about that, when they're that old, they usually need it.
