Silver dollar is stuck in a bezel - any help is appreciated

Greetings,
I'm trying to free this silver dollar from its holder without damaging it. There are two small holes 180* apart but nothing else to work with. Any tips from the crowd? Thanks.

It could be glued or even soldered in place.

    291fifth.
My thoughts exactly. 30 - 40 bucks on a good example and then you can experiment and find out. Please post pictures. My thoughts we’re mineral oil but maybe a careful dremel cutting disk. Good luck 😁
Freezing causes metal to contract but I don’t think enough to help

Not worth the effort to remove it. ;)

Oh yah , Oilers99, please don’t hold a coin like that. By the edges please
To me it’s similar to fingernails on a chalkboard 😁

Thanks for the feedback. I know that it is a common date. Would any dealer buy it as is, and would they discount it a bit since it's stuck in a holder? Thanks.

Take a hammer to the edge and see if she cracks

To me that's a bezel coin now. I'd try to use it or sell it as a coin that's ready for use in jewelry, etc.

Try tapping the bezel with a hammer, then compressed air.

Don't bother and yes, never hold a coin by anything but it's edges. Fingerprints can ruin a coin in a matter of weeks.

Sounds like you really want to free that coin. It's okay to have some fun. Freeze it first, overnight, then gently tap the rim of the bezel. It's only coming out in one direction. Good luck. Peace Roy

Fingerprints aren't going to hurt that coin.

That metal frame is bent down over the coin. Would need to be cut and you could not do it without damaging the coin further. Don't bother.

The two places for attaching the bezel to a chain appear to be broken off.

I think this is more the situation. Is the bezel silver or non-silver? If silver it should add to weight. If not might cut it off if your only looking to sell for spot.

Have the bezel checked with one of them new fangled metal analysis gizmos and if silver just ( if scraping) sell it as is. Weight is good. 😁

I would sell it for melt at some shop or dealer at a show. Not worth the work involved. Cheers, RickO

Take it to a local jeweler, and get their opinion on it. A jeweler was probably the person that put it in a bezel for the previous owner. They may have had a request like this before and might know how to free the peace dollar from the bezel with only minimal damage.

Perhaps you could send it to Bezel Fawlty?

Why throw good money after bad? THe jeweler is not going to work for free.

I know these bezels. They are very difficult to get the coin out of, and the coin is already ruined. Keep it as it, or sell it to a poker player who wants something heavy to hold his cards down or whatever they do in poker nowadays.

@CaptHenway It was just a suggest if he is determined to remove the bezel. You've got a good idea with the paper weight. I would give it to a golfer as a ball marker.

I'm not sure why we're still talking about this. 🤔

The coin is scrap as a numismatic collectable. The bezel is probably sterling.

Either sell the whole thing at melt, or repurpose the whole thing again as jewelry or a belt buckle or other trinket, as is. :)

Perhaps its a candidate for the railroad tracks. We’ve got an active railway in town and the freight trains 3 times a day. Placement is critical to getting a proper flattening. The kids here do it for sport but say anything larger than a quarter is tough to get to remain on the rail. I’ve heard reports of putting the coin in a heavy duty baggy and taping the outer edges to the track but not covering the coin. The plastic peels off nicely and results are good. I saw an Ike $ done like this and it was a good job of kinda equal pressure 😁

This thread brings back a really really bad memory! I had a very similar bezel around a Morgan for many years. It was a common date but a nice looking Morgan with great patina! Several years ago, I thought it was time to try and have the bezel removed. I took it to a local "reputably" jeweler....so I thought! I asked the owner (several times), DO YOU THINK YOU CAN REMOVE THIS BEZEL WITHOUT damaging the coin??... He assured me, he could. I asked him how much?.. He said $10.00. So I left the coin with him and he gave me a receipt.

I went back the next day to pick up the coin. He removed the bezel. The only problem was, after removing the bezel, he promptly used some type of silver paste cleaner and a bench buffing machine to clean and destroy the coin!!! I just about lost my mind right there!!! I was pissed-off!!! I told this guy: YOU JUST DESTROYED MY COIN!!! He gave me some stupid look! I was loud, rude and I made my point in front of his customers and employees! I made my point loud and clear! I took the coin and walked out. Can you believe, the guy still actually wanted to get paid!! I walked back, ripped up the receipt and throw it on the counter. I was a nice guy about it......I should have thrown it in his face!!

Yes, it was probably my fault. I should have told the guy......DO NOT CLEAN THIS COIN!! I wish I had before and after pictures to show. I sold the coin awhile ago for melt.

My blood pressure is going up just telling you this story.

Thanks for listening, I feel better now. 😂

    OUCH!

i gotta say, there is NO way, if you haven't already, once you regain your composure, that yo....NEVERMIND

i just about made the post but realized you said you didn't have the before/after pics BUT it did draft my quote of your post but i didn't submit but NOW have the draft to go ahead and enter. yippie!

np. it was just random good fortune to have worked out that way. a lot of times i don't submit a post but it saves the draft.

for the future, any important or lengthy post, ctrl+a then ctrl+c (if windows) before editing or submitting a post. don't count on the forum software. for REALLY important posts, copy it and paste into notepad or whatever.

editing the posts is where the error is occurring 99% of the time. we leave 1% for the tech people or mods deleting posts or just random tech problems no one causes or can prevent.
