First world problem...
Sometimes I end up with a cleaned circulated coin, one with unnatural surfaces, so I put it loose in my pocket with a misguided aspiration of "circulating" off the unnatural and letting it tone back on a window sill. Invariably, however, I lose the coin somewhere, it falls out of my pocket or I take it out and can't remember where I put it. What am I thinking? Anyone have a similar problem or is it just me?

My 3 pocket pieces each take turns going missing, sometimes for days, sometimes for weeks and sometimes even for years before mysteriously showing up again. Here’s a group photo of the last time that all 3 were together, the Stone Mountain commemorative went missing shortly thereafter and still hasn’t shown back up yet

I like that stuff.
The only coins I carry in my pocket, are change I am prepared to spend. Any special or interesting coins get put aside to either evaluate further or keep in my curio box. Cheers, RickO
as a self-professed collector, not reseller, after all these MANY years/decades, by now, aren't we calling it what it is...
a curio trunk?
I've never heard of or seen a cleaned coin go into a pocket and come out months or years later without still looking cleaned, albeit more worn.
I think it is a misconception collectors have that carrying around coins will bring back original surfaces.

You're right, you're so right, I'll never do it again
For mine, I’m not trying to hide a cleaning, I just like having big silver coins with me all the time. Someone else had them as pocket pieces before I bought them and I like continuing the tradition. It’s fun pulling them out occasionally when people ask me if I have change, but mostly I pull them out when I’m bored or anxious and use them like a worry stone.

I gave up on pocket pieces as I lose them on airplanes. I've lost 3 cc's including a real nice unmolested 79cc.
Ugh,

I feel better knowing I'm not alone
I gave up on pocket pieces for the exact same reasons... I kept losing them!
I actually tried the OP's experiment a couple of times... the first time with cleaned/dipped Lincoln Wheat Cents and Indian Head Cents... after several months, and losing a couple of them, the coins looked really no better than when they went in. I had a corroded Large Cent that I thought would miraculously get better too... yeah, that didn't work out either. I ended up with a corroded piece of copper that got more orange in my pocket than medium brown... and highlighted the corrosion.
