What Happened Here?

Got this in change today. Looks like it is the type of thing you get with grease on the die but it also looks about the size of a dime. The rim of the coin looks ok, so no one hammered it. I'm sure one of you out there has seen a similar surface on a coin before.
Just curious.

Clandestine work at the mint in the 70s😂
I don’t
Know what caused that but I’d give PMD. Acid or sandblasted but I’m gust guessing

I'd say that rim is in fact hammered (the term used most often is 'spooned'). You can see that it is rolled up to the lettering around the rim.
Not sure what is in the center of the obverse and reverse.. perhaps a coating of some sort. Not a mint error IMO.
Ya, I have to go with pmd. Looks like rim damage and as mentioned, looks like it's coated with something. I say tap it with a punch and see if it don't chip off. Lol

This one spent some time in a rock tumbler.
It almost looks like a washing machine coin that was acid treated.

Leave that determination to the experts.
That is neater than the pennies that I got today.
Looks like a dryer coin to me.

Looks chemically altered and spooned.

Rim has been spooned and obverse/reverse acid etched. Cheers, RickO
Dryer coin as @lordmarcovan said.
The tumbling wore down the rims and contact with other fixed or tumbling objects caused the obverse and reverse wear. Here is A link from error-ref with an excellent explanation

I like this theory. I can see the tumbling doing the damage to the rims and diameter, and the grit wearing down the obverse and reverse.
I vote for leprosy infected coin.
Looks like Abe is trying to get out of some quick sand

Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.
