1922 USPI 1c - Nearly Unheard of in RED!

USPI 1922 1c - Lyman Allen #2.21 (KM #163) - Mintage: 3,519,100

These United States - Philippines coins were minted at the U.S. Branch mint in Manila even though they received no mintmark.

The Manila Mint produced coins for three years that had no mintmark, and the USPI one centavos was the only denomination minted by the Manila mint in 1922.
The Manila Mint produced no USPI coinage in 1923-1924, and when coin production resumed in 1925, the “M” mint mark was added to the coins produced there.

For the USPI 1922 1c, PCGS has graded (35) Brown, (23) Red Brown and (1) Red.

‘’Justhavingfun” was able to secure a spectacular gem PCGS-MS66RB of this date for his landmark 1C collection, but was never able to nail down a RED designated coin for this date in any grade during his near four decades of actively pursuing this series.

The current all-time finest Maharlika Collection of USPI one centavos added this lone red 1922 one centavos to a set that includes just about every available one centavos in red. The (39) coin set has (36) top pops, of which, no less than (25) coins are pop one!

Spectacular rarity! The analogy is it’s around 1982 and one is thinking of pursuing gem mintmarked Full Red Lincoln cents from the 1920’s. How did that turn out!

This would make a cute Appendix to my book on the 1922 Lincoln cents. A 1922 "plain" Centavo.

Why did they not use a min t mark in that year? Any particular reason?

Could you please put me in touch with the owner of this coin and photograph so that I might ask permission to use it in the book?

    Thanks,

    TD

Capt. - This 1922 coin is owned by a customer of mine. I’ll ask him to send the coin over to me to evaluate whether the coin could upgrade to MS64+. I’ll also get my son Justin to snap a professional pic of the coin (while it’s in my possession) to send to you for inclusion in your new book.

My take - it’s not really a “cute” story coin. It’s a monster sleeper rarity along the lines of a full red 1925-S or 1926-S gem Lincoln cent back in the late 70’s or early 80’s.

    Just my 2 cents.
