Went to the Denver Mint today and....

....rolled out a cent in the gift shop. Of course it was a 1922-D.

First time I have been there since 1983. A fairly good historical background tour, but the Schuler presser are so boring in their enclosures. You can see the blanks going in and the struck coins coming out, but you get no feel for the stamping. In the old days you could see the die assembly cycling up and down.
did it give free samples?
Sweet
My son and grandson went last week and how the gift shop has changed from 1993, last time I was there. Lot more trinkets and bobbles than it used to be. Here’s a picture. Forgot to send a copper penny for rolling but your 22 is just spectacular.

While leaving the Mint I walked past this interesting-looking scrap metal laying in the courtyard behind the building, apparently waiting to be recycled. Looks like some sort of die or hub holder from a hubbing press, but that is just a guess.
D.Carr recycling? Just a funny thought to see Dan out back diving in their dumpster. I realize that he’s got an older press but the image is kinda cool. I’ve always imagined what all he’s gone through to acquire the numerous things needed for his work.
Great picture.

Cool!
Go and pick up fast if you can lift them. Lathe parts are worth money.
Those are chucks and such... Wow a 4-jaw chuck it is expensive.
Also cast additional support for long bars (=steady rest).
You know metal working. Looks like 1950-60.
Why people throw these to trash very sad.
USA people have too much money compared to European.
Every piece worth many +100$ hundreds of dollars for a machinist.
If parts are from a rare classic lathe prices are +1000$ dollars.
Someone go save those parts from melt !
Beautiful

Wow... expensive trash.... Must be some major issue causing it to be scrapped. Perhaps just a major equipment change/modification. Cheers, RickO
I wonder how dumb the government may not be. We the people own tons of matter. Storing, moving, curating, selling, preserving, marketing may be costlier that hauling it to the scrap yard. I compare it to me trying to market two hundred pounds of pennies, a few at a time, if I were paying myself to do it.
But then they have to find the right person who needs/wants it and for something like that might take a while, and who knows, maybe it's already been sitting around for years. Easier and more productive for them(any large production facility really) to scrap out and let the recyclers handle it.
Collector, occasional seller
Would've been a hoot if you found a mangled planchet or coin Jammed in there somewhere. Peace Roy

The change machine was giving out Mankiller quarters, so I bought $10 worth to give out at Halloween.
I don't think that it would be a good idea to pick up anything behind a very secure facility's fence........

Boy........ I wish I was Trick-or-Treating in YOUR neighborhood! Need some of those D's!
@CaptHenway-
Was that a private tour or one for the general public? You said; courtyard behind the building. Was it more like a load dock area? You were able to walk right past that stuff? Although, I guess it's not that critical. You can apparently see it from the street. That's a tour I would like to take one day.
