Would Belichick stick with Zappe?
Interesting article about the mind of Bill Belichick and the quarterback position.
Could Bill Belichick pull a Bill Belichick again with his QBs? Of course he could!
We’ve seen this before, haven’t we? A Patriots starting QB with seemingly all the job security in the world goes down with an injury, his younger backup steps in, wins some games and then… wins the starting job for the rest of time. Well, for the rest of his time in New England, at least.
That happened way back in 2001, of course, when Drew Bledsoe, who had just a few months before signed the biggest contract in NFL history at the time, was knocked out of a game early in the season against the Jets with a serious injury. Tom Brady took over, started off slowly, and then a few months down the line was the guy leading the team to its first-ever Super Bowl win.
That was crazy when it happened because Bledsoe had the big contract and was considered a star and everyone in New England thought he would be their quarterback for years to come.
That didn’t happen, though, as Belichick saw something that he liked in Brady and made the move that changed the NFL forever.
Now here we are in 2022, Belichick is still in charge of the Patriots, and it looks like he could have to make another decision about his QBs with one option being of the shocking variety.
Mac Jones, who the Patriots used a first round pick on last year, has missed the last three games with an ankle injury. The last time we saw him he was throwing three bad interceptions (and no touchdowns) in a loss at home to the Ravens.
Since then, Bailey Zappe has stepped for most of three games and almost won all three of them (the only loss being in OT at Lambeau Field in his first NFL appearance ). He looked great Sunday against the Browns, throwing for 329 yards, 2 TDs and zero INTs in a 38-15 win on the road.
Would Belichick stick with Zappe if Jones is ready to go against the Bears in Week 7? I’d have to think he wouldn’t, considering all that the team has put in to Jones.
But I do remember what I saw happen in 2001 so I can’t say he would FOR SURE go back to Jones as his starter because I thought he would FOR SURE go back to Bledsoe all those years ago.
There are some interesting things about Zappe that make me think he could stay the starter.
He threw 34 passes on Sunday, which shows the Patriots fully believe in his talents.
They didn’t need to take a backup QB in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft but they did because Belichick saw something he liked in this kid from Western Kentucky and when Belichick likes something he really likes something.
Zappe hasn’t been turning the ball over a lot (he has just one INT against the Lions) and Belichick knows how much of a killer turnovers are to a team.
I totally expect Belichick will go back to Jones as his starter once he’s healthy. It’s the easy decision and nobody would bat an eye at the move. It would make all the sense in the world.
Buuuuuuuutttttttt, Belichick has never been afraid to make a decision that he thinks is best for the team and then be able to push through all the media attention a decision like that creates.
He lives for that stuff.
Either way, this will be fascinating to see how it all plays out for the Patriots, who are now 3-3 and very much in playoff contention.

If he thinks Zappe fills the role better than Mac, you better believe BB will stick with him. Its his thing
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Belichick dumped Drew Bledsoe really fast for Brady, so I could see him doing the same here if the team keeps winning.
Man, I didn't realize this until just a few minutes ago, but Bailey Zappe is the guy that broke Joe Burrows records in college, he threw 61 TDs and 5,845 yds passing, unbelievable.
I was reading, the Patriots took Zappe with the 137th pick in the 4th round of the draft, I'm a bit surprised that Zappe was drafted so late, considering the records he broke in college. I mean, he's no bum off the street, the guy can obviously sling the rock, I think Belichick has some serious considering to do here.
Look, I'm sorry for posting this with the foul language, but it's just too funny.
According to Albert Breer, things have gotten sideways with Mac Jones and the Patriots. Here's the video.
Yes, yes and yes!
Go Zappe!!
Belichick can get the Janitor to play QB and win the game -
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
I read somewhere that Mac not playing yesterday was a gametime decision. I have a feeling he's gonna go all out to be ready for that MNF in Chicago. We'll see how BB handles it.

You Patriots fans are lucky, you have two great quarterbacks to choose from. Me, well, I have Booger.
If I had to honestly guess, I'd say that Belichick is doing two things here. He is going out of his way with the boilerplate answers to make people continue about the. Why? He wants to see how Mac responds. This will let him know all that he needs to know about Mac. And he throwing a lot at Zappe very quickly so that he knows what he has there, just in case, but also because of the following scenario....Mac Jones returns and plays above expectations for several years. Zappe can be a nice piece to flip. In the NFL, it even college, the QB adage goes against the grain of things off the field... if you have two you have none ...I think Belichick is going against the grain here and is going to see what sticks.
@thisistheshow that is a good commentary on the current situation. I have always looked at BB as one of those 3d chess type people. not just looking at the here and now. even at 70, I can see him playing the long game.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
....
I agree! when I typed that out last night I did something I rarely do...I posted without proofreading. So a few sentences sound like gibberish, but I'll leave them as is for the sake of posterity.
I admit that I don't watch college football but didn't Mac go thru some type of QB controversary at Alabama while there? IIRC i read something about Tua,Jalen Hurts & Mac all competing for the starting job at one point so this shouldn't besomething new to him. Hopefully he just competes harder and doesn't complain about it publicly. The vultures that make up our local sports media would have a field day with this.

Not sure if this has been mentioned here yet but with the Pats win on sunday Belichick is now tied for 2nd all time on the head coaching wins (regular+postseason) list with George Halas at 324 wins. Don Shula has the most wins with 347.

It’s all fun and games until the last 6 games of the season
"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
will probably need 2 more seasons after this one. I am sure, unless there is a major health problem BB will hang around to pick up those wins.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
i would be shocked if BB went back to Mac against the Bears. it would be oh so foolish. the only realistic path my team has to springing an upset on Monday night is if they win the TO battle decisively.
go ahead, Bill. insert a rusty, 85-90% in recovery from an ankle injury, turnover-prone Mac Jones into the game and give us a chance
you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet
Its too bad about declining that avatar bet offer now that Lebron has come out as the new spokesman for Reece's Peanut Butter Cups. 😎😉😎
