Non collector friends often don"t believe that there was a 3C coin when I show them one. I only have a well worn one and no photo.
What could $.03 buy in the 1880's?
A postage stamp. I don't know how accurate it is but I have read that one of the reasons for the $3 gold was that it allowed the purchase of 100 3c stamps.

nice "three cent" @wozymodo
I would love to show everyone the one and only 3¢ coin that I ever had......But, I can't...... Because it was stolen from me. I think it was an 1853(?). I don't remember.... Hell....How can I remember the date now?! ..I was only 8/9 years old when it disappeared...... It was the pride and joy of my collection!..... That moon really intrigued me.....AND THOSE STARS!........Anyway, I showed it to another kid.....and right after that?......I never saw it again!..... He was a creepy little kid and he grew up to be an even worse adult..... A jerk........Jail Time.....The Whole Nine Yards!......But, there is a Silver Lining to every Dark Cloud....... I learned a lesson early on in life......DON'T SHOW YOUR COINS TO ANYBODY!...... AND....DON'T LET ANYBODY EVEN KNOW THAT YOU COLLECT COINS!!!!........
LESSON LEARNED!....
One is due in the mail today. If I can get pics of it I'll post it!

That’s the cheap variety. The pieces with the big eagle on them are the tokens that bring the big bucks. I don’t have those varieties. I was “funning with you” when I added that.
I see, I don't know those pieces well enough to know the difference, I have a bunch of the one cent Feuchtwangers (way under-appreciated design, imo) and I just remember a while ago when I was looking at getting a 3 cent they were all expensive

Yes, the three cent pieces cost more than most all of the one cent pieces. There are some very rare one cent varieties. The “big eagle” varieties were selling for over $3,000 when I was a dealer more than a decade ago.
How about a couple proofs? 63 CAC and 64, respectively.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
In the 1840s and 1850s, lower postage rates and the advent of prepaid postage stamps transformed the mail system in the United States. The price of mailing a letter from coast to coast dropped from 40 cents in 1847 to just 3 cents by 1863. Rate dropped to 2 cents in 1883 and the need for the three cent coins disappeared..

There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who do not.
The obverse die for J-111 "3" and J-112 "III"
was also used for the 1849 V-8 half dime.
It was used for a few proofs and also business strikes.
So they didn't have to create a new obverse design or die for that one.
Apparently the plan was to use planchets that were 50% silver for the 3c,
compared to the usual 90% silver for the half dime.
