I got the Northern Lights in change today.

Sometimes, when I have a quarter in my pocket and I see a vending machine, I stick the quarter in there and firmly press the "coin return" button. Most machines will give you a different coin. In the past, I have received a BU 1965 quarter and, with a small dollar, a proof Presidential dollar - I believe it was a Chester Arthur. This time I got one of the most beautiful coins I have ever seen. It's a 2008-D Alaska statehood quarter with crazy rainbow toning. I showed it to someone I was with at the moment (they weren't a collector), and they said, "Looks like the Northern Lights." It was a perfect description - and a wonderful coincidence that it happened on an Alaska quarter.

The reverse was impossible to accurately photograph with my setup, because my phone makes all my coins look orange in a direct photo. The first image is the least orange picture I could get, and the second image is the most accurate color, besides the orange at 6 o'clock. The obverse was not nearly as attractive, and some might even call it environmental damage, but I don't care.

This coin is definitely going in a 2x2.

I have never tried that.... I am still looking for a W quarter in the wild... Maybe will try the vending machines also. Cheers, RickO

I used to put paper dollars in the vending machines at work and get Unc Sacs and Presidential series Dollar coins.

Edited to add... I still have a couple of those coins in my Type set.
