A nice example of a very tough and underrated date. Nice color!
It is nice that we have quite a few collectors here appreciative of these very scarce to downright rare early S mint gold pieces. They tend to slip under many collectors' radars because very few collectors can afford to collect Liberty Head gold by date and mintmark. For authentic US gold coins with fewer than 100 known examples, they really offer great value.
they wont be affordable for ever, I think the problem isn't that some are so rare is that they are all almost impossibly rare. If on a few were there would be mint mark runs but a S run is only possible for maybe a dozen whales
Love the design and that a Seated Liberty is on a 3 cent pattern!!! Exotic!!! You made the 1 count.
Shhhh...it's from before the Harry Bass Gallery went away
Ah. LOL. I was in Colorado Springs over the summer on a professional tour of Colorado and Utah. For the two days I was there, the museum was closed. The Bass wing was never to open again after a few more weeks. @#$%&!

I'm not "Liking" the fact that you didn't get to go lol...just acknowledgeing. Bummer!
At some point soonish I'll be posting images of almost every coin that was on display in the Bass Gallery.
I made many visits over the years (I live an hour away) so I decided to document most of it a couple weeks before it was removed.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
This is a very attractive coin for the grade, with minimal marks and has great color. The surfaces are above average and the strike is good. This is also a rare date!
Lovely coins!!! Is the trime a proof or a business strike?
The trime is a Proof-67.

These are all rare coins in their elevated grades. The BU-61 coins are all approaching or are in condition census, not to mention CAC'ed!
This group comes from an amazing PCGS set, where each coin has notable eye appeal and the effort has been many years in the making. There are very few sets with coins of these grades and quality!

I agree, for the last 3 years I've been casually assembling a date set for these. I didn't plan on it, it just sort of happened!

I love the old PCGS holder housing the 1869.
