CDN wholesale price is $300: Heritage Auction 11October2022 LOT #23468
Maybe the odd-looking area under the die break is worth a premium. But 10X wholesale?

It's only insane if it's not worth that much to you? Clearly multiple people really wanted it for some reason to go that high...

That's a wild die state, with the interior part of the die sunken.
Usually it's the exterior part of the die that sinks.
If you need that die state for a particular reason. I tried to look that coin up in the PCGS price guide and there was nothing there…..maybe someone else can find it,
At least two collectors with money really wanted that variety.
Which does not detract from the OP really. What will the next, if such exists, go for?
Well, just Love coins, period.
Price is relative... Depends on the individuals involved in the auction. How they perceive the coin, their collecting interests, and the financial resources of the competing parties. Cheers, RickO

it is also a rather desirable die state/marriage that is a rather lovely example.
probably some serious expert seated half guys or gals been watiting for an example like this for a LONG time.
i'm not an expert on this one, perhaps the latest die state example known?
this also had something to do with it.
Great looking coin with a lot of 'action'. This is more of a common issue, so having this late die state makes this an uncommon common date. Congratulations to the new owner.
I was the underbidder, not sure who won it.

That’s a fantastic looking coin with a lot going for it.
You are the real winner of the auction.
looked up the full WB set registry and there is only 1 marriage listed for the date. that is WILD!
wb-101 (just as a side-point, shouldn't it be wb-1?)
There are lots of die marriages for that date, they just haven't been publicly released or published yet. That was a rare marriage and an even rarer die stage. Honestly, at a certain point I bid it up out of spite, and wouldn't have been very excited to get stuck with it at that price.

The seated half guys or gals... what is the other half? Which half do they sit on? The mind wobbles...
one marriage didn't seem to make any sense to me but i also didn't open the WB book to find out. just thought it was VERY weird the registry doesn't appear to list them.
As far as I knew, Bill Bugert is still working on the rest of the P mint varieties in the more complete WB attribution register that still uses "WB" but now utilizes a single/two-digit numbering scheme as compared to the older WB-101, WB-102, etc scheme., He has released two P mint volumes thus far, 1839 to 1852 Vol V and 1856 to 1873 Vol VI, and did not include 1853 thru 1855 with arrows in his recent release. There were some 3.5 million 1853 P mint half dollars struck, surely there is more than one variety.
Pretty cool late die state. I would rather have a higher graded example of this common date but I can see a variety collector really wanting it.
Maybe someone thinks they discovered a new die state of a known die variety? Beats me. Either way, I've never been one to pay high premiums for prime or terminal die states for early halves, and I've generally advised against it for Bust material. I just stick to the scarce (usually R5<) die marriages since they're more widely collected and retain their value better than 'A' or 'B' die states of rather common marriages.
That very well might be the finest surviving example for this die state... insanity? Not even close.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
It only takes two bidders with deep pockets who will nuke bid what they want. Money is no object to some collectors.
If they want it, they want it and will bid until they get it no matter how high the bid is. When you get two people like this bidding on the same item, it could reach moon money and beyond.
I learned a long time ago that if a woman wanted a lot that I wanted, she would always win it because she never took her hand down. Sure, I bid a few of them up, but it did not help me at all.
