Ike cherry-picking gone well.

Last month, I posted Ike cherry-picking gone bad in this forum. This time, I'll post on one that went well.
I happened upon an eBay listing for a PCGS MS-65 1971-S FS-401 Ike. On inspection of the photos, it appeared to be a DIVa 1SB-601 "stovepipe". The DIVa 1SB-601 "stovepipe" is not one of the typical Ikes found in PCGS holders attributed as a FS-401, and certain does not match the image in the CPG. The 1SB-601 is from an obverse die that produced only only a relative fewer number of coins, compared to either of the other Ike 1971-S peg leg obverse dies that typically are found in FS-401 holders - DIVa 1SB-201 and DIVa 1SB-202.
Actually, there are four different 1971-S Ike obverse dies that yielded peg legs, but only two typically end up in FS-401 holders. And, DIVa 1SB-601 is typically not one of the coins that ends up attributed as a FS-401. I have cherry-picked a DIVa 1SB-601 in an FS-401 holder two other times, but this one matches my highest graded DIVa 1SB-601 "stovepipe" (one in a PCGS holder, but not attributed as a FS-401). I'll likely add this one to my peg leg showcase - just to have the FS-401 listed in the description.
Cherry picking tips: The DIVA 1SB-601 "stovepipe" has a more symmetric base of the peg leg than do either 1SB-201 and 1SB-202, It also has a more robust / less abraded: a) tail of the R, b) left crossbar of the T, and c) left upright of the Y - all in LIBERTY.
DIVa 1SB-201, 1SB-202, and 1SB-601 are all single obverse die varieties, with an approximate mintage ratio of 33:55:12, respectively. (The average die life for a dollar obverse die in 1971 was ~100,000 coins.)

i'm not familiar with the variations of peg legs and/or similar.
what would be the intersting factor of a stovepipe vs a normal peg being just a different die state/level of abrading?
rare intermediate state or ....
for those of us not familiar.
and for posterity, the coin has a FS desgination 401 whereas the 601 does not have an FS designation, right?
i'm not saying pcgs doesn't know of this one but easily could be a situation where a generic attribution (even for a paid FS designation) applies to more than one marriage/state/variety etc.
There are four different 1971-S business strike Ike dies with peg legs. Each has clear markers, whether it be a) the presence or absence of abrading (the 1SB-601 does not), b) the resultant appearance of RTY, c) the pattern of doubling, d) mint mark placement, and e) other markers. (the 1SB-202 has two known reverse die marriages, while the 1SB-201 and 1SB-601 only have one known reverse die marriage) In my peg leg showcase linked in the OP, I do have more photos of each 1971-S business trike peg leg.
.
To be clear, when I refer to 1SB-201, 1SB-202, and 1SB-601, I am referring to Ike Group DIVa variety listings. The FS-401, of course, is the listing in CPG. And typically, one would find 1SB-201 and 1SB-202 varieties attributed by TPG as FS-401. To see a 1SB-601 in in a TPG FS-401 holder is very uncommon because a) it is not technically a FS-401, and b) it is likely more 'rare' (fewer minted) than either 1SB-201 or 1SB-202.

Agreed.

1) Why is it called Stovepipe? Perhaps I am missing something, but I do not see anything in the design elements you pictured that scream stovepipe.
2) Can you post comparison images?
3) Congrats on your cherrypick. Hopefully it will pay off.
Stovepipe is a a name given by Rob Ezerman, referring to the "leg" of the R relative to a normal serif R of nearly all other 1971-S business strike Ikes.
.
I have plenty of comparative photos in my peg leg showcase
.
I'm not sure it will pay off, but it sure does make this Ike collector happy.

The link you post to your showcase does not work in either of your posts. Hover over the link and you will see it says denied.
