I don't get it. A purposefully misaligned die on a fantasy piece for over $100. Am I missing something here?

USAF (Ret) 1974 - 1994 - The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. Remembering RickO, a brother in arms.

It appears as though the die was engraved in a way so that the design is off set. So while it appears that it is a MAD (misaligned die), the dies were likely perfectly aligned during striking.

Thinking the same thing. If this were an overstruck silver eagle, you'd see that in the margin on the left of the obverse, no?

I'd say you're not missing any intelligence. ;)

it is still MAD just mis-aligned design, not mis-aligned die. ;)

It could be an intentionally misaligned die. Why don't we just ask him?

Well, it sold.... So now we wait to see it show up somewhere in another sale. Cheers, RickO

I closed the offer. There are usually a couple or more on fleabay.
For a Carr Art creation it's a higher mintage issue & still open since April 2021.
    1,370 overstruck so far.
I have a couple major 30% MAD strikes so the addition of it at favorable admission price plays well in my error archive even though it's not an error. If it were Truely MAD there would be equal weakness on reverse

That is correct. The engraving on the die face was intentionally done off-center and both the obverse and reverse dies were centered in the collar for the over-striking. This was a commissioned project and I'm not sure why they wanted it that way, The same customer has commissioned a significant quantity of different things, including other oddities.

when you get time, if you'd explain in a few sentences just how the piston or whatever goes up and down that holds the die can move SO far side to side and/or allow dies to be so tilted w/o the machine parts breaking. i can understand a little play in the parts but not so much to explain some of the crazy errors we see.

i also see this happen in the videos on the youtube with people smashing all kinds of crap. the really hard/round stuff causes the press part coming down to go to one side or the other, sometimes pretty far.
