USPS again Update
I have had the same P.O. Box for 52 years and have never really had a problem. It has been a good office but several clerks have retired or moved to another office. It has been going down hill for a couple of years.
Last week I had a package from Stack's that the tracking # showed was at the office. It took them two days to find the package. I had to spend an hour and get a supervisor involved to find the package. It is a very small office.
Friday I had a package from PCGS that the tracking # showed it at the office. On Saturday they could not find it. Today they could not find it. It is a very small office! Tonight the tracking # shows that it has been returned to PCGS!
I have sent an email to PCGS to get it turned around and will try and call them tomorrow.
Enough is enough. I will get another P.O. Box at another station that is great.
I was at the new P.O. when it opened this AM. They actually opened the lobby a few minutes early. There were 3 window clerks working the window and they were moving the customers through very fast. I rented a new P.O. Box that is actually $24 cheaper per year than the old box. It was a feeling of relief. I went home and emailed PCGS. They have changed my 2 orders to go to my new box. I then started notifying people of my new address. I will be so glad when I do not have to go to the old P.O.

I don’t blame you at all. I had a situation where I did not receive a package although tracking said I had. A week later it shows up in my PO Box with note “sorry I opened it by mistake” It was put in wrong POB by usps personnel. Luckily the person who got it was honest. The Pcgs coin I bought was there.
I mailed a very important letter Friday before Labor Day and it is still missing. I’ve sent several letters to same address. It’s just gone?🤨

Usps services sometimes is not good. In the last two years I can’t purchase shipping label from usps.com anymore. It just refused to take any credit card. However, I can purchase stamp online. I just can’t figure it out. I emailed technical support all they said is to make sure your information is entered correctly. So I ended using PayPal to print shipping label.
it's not a perfect service but then again last time looked it was staffed by humans who are not perfect nor is the world we live in that is how life is
when i deal with the USPS i don't expect much that way i'm not disappointed in the service and when things happen i let them deal with it as it happened on their watch now they get to fix the issue

They will find it and send it on it's way when they close the PO and empty the building. It will be behind a desk, pinned against a wall. Don't worry, it will get there.

I had a coin delivered today that went missing in mid July.
Just finished printing off a shipping label to send it back to the ebay seller. I had already gotten a refund and purchased the same date/mm coin in a higher grade since then.
Was it insured? The eBay seller may have already been paid for it. If so, keep it for all the trouble the USPS put you through.

I don' think it was.
Try Pirate ship. It discounts the shipping and is easy. just need a printer. However, UPS and USPS are the carriers, but is still cheaper. Try it, you might like it.

If it was insured and the Ins. Co. paid the claim, the insurance co owns the item.
The seller has been through as much trouble as the buyer has. If the seller refunded the buyer's payment, the coin belongs to the seller or the insurance company.
Golden: If you rented it for 52 years, you should own it by now, maybe the whole PO.
Dang right.
My worst USPS experience and it wasn't "really" terrible.

You called it a "small" post office, but they misplace packages?
I think our definition of "small" is different. Mine has two clerks who work alone for each shift. I can see the entire back area of the PO from the window. When i walk in she is already getting my oversized mail if I have any.
Lots of personal interaction, lots of personal accountability, and unless they happen to be a crazy ex-girlfriend, you can really rely on them to look out for you.
I highly recommend small POs.
It is a small office with incompetent people. The office that I am going to move to is also a small office with friendly and knowledgeable people. It is night and day difference between the two offices. It is hard to believe that they are in the same organization.
I have a PO Box in a small town a few miles from where I live. It is half the price that a PO BOX in the town where I live costs. My PO Box is accessible 24/7.
I got it for two reasons. One is that I do not care to have coins delivered to my house. And, two is, prior to getting PO BOX, i had a coin "out for delivery" , that never made it to my house, and was never found by the PO.
I like it much better now, because shortly after my packages shows "arrived at PO", it shows "delivered to PO Box". It is a very small town, and losing a package once it gets to the PO is highly unlikely.
I can then pick it up at my convenience, and not worry about a mail person delivering my mail to the wrong address, or otherwise losing my packages.
@golden... That is amazing for such problems in a small facility. Reeks of incompetence. Cheers, RickO
Not only are they incompetent, but one of the women on the window has on a dirty P.O., shirt with food stains on it ,that looks like in has not been washed in a month!
That MUST be a horrible feeling.
Completely inexcusable.
Competent people make all the difference.
Glad that you are switching offices.

It's not only small post offices, the whole system is screwed up!
I mailed a registered package out of my post office in Cedar City Utah on Thursday late afternoon. The package is going from Utah to Ca. The clerk told me it was to late for it to go today but it would be put in the safe and ship on Friday. As soon as I got home I entered the tracking number for text messages for the package
Friday afternoon I received a text saying that it left my post office at 3:43p/m
The next text I received was Monday morning at 12:04a/m saying that arrived at Salt Lake City! Really??? 3 days to go 300 miles?
Anyway, I just received another text saying that it arrived in Los Angeles Ca. at 4:34p/m! WOW another 3 days!
So, Friday to Thursday to go about 500 miles, and 6 days!!!!
Now it has to go from Los Angeles Ca. to the destination Irvine CA. Another 3 days???
Every time I ship a package out I worry about the incompetence of the people and the system. I wish that Fed-X would allow you to ship with insurance without having to get private insurance.
Just my rant

Registered is slow due to the added tracking and security. If you want it to go faster you can even get it there overnight, but with less security.
I had a package arrive at the local sort center and projected to be delivered that day. Only to find it’s way on a truck heading 800 miles away. It took 3 more days to finally arrive.
A friend works at that facility and the stories he tells about broken and failing equipment makes me shake my head.
I understand that it takes longer, but the point was, the system is broken! Would you drive 300 miles in the wrong direction from where you are going? And spend 3 extra days doing it?

Maybe she's also a coin dealer & she wore the shirt at the first show she ever set up at. She's done really well on the show circuit, so now she doesn't want to disturb the shirt's mojo.

My mind reader refuses to charge me....
USPS has big sorting centers that everything flows through. You know, like hubs for airlines............ I have no doubt the algorithms show this is a more efficient way send mail or fly.......................
Sorry to hear. COVID really helped out with package delivery, as either my wife or I were home to sign for deliveries, sad how you can't trust the Post Office to put an item in a box in their own building.
Haven’t heard a thing.
Funny, lately I’ve had great luck with packages and letters. Weird that the only one that really matters is missing

Got a new P.O. Box today!
won't pretty much the same people be getting your mail to it?

In my time as a lurker and active member at this site it is clear that there are problems with the USPS in a very specific, localized way. Certain people seem to have problems with certain locations regarding service and even theft. In all my years of sending and receiving packages, both for myself and when I was working, there has never been a problem of any sort. Overall, I find the USPS to be very friendly, efficient, helpful and accountable for what they are doing. Considering the volume that goes through even a tiny PO it is remarkable to me that accounts such as this aren't more frequent.
The post by JBK seems to me to be more typical of my USPS experiences.
Of course the USPS has screwups! Just like any business. The USPS processes and delivers an average of 425.3 MILLION pieces of mail PER DAY (2021 USPS figures). And 3.3 Million pounds per week. Much of this is automated, and certainly some can get rerouted due to various reasons. And some may end up never making it to its destination.
When one lets those numbers really sink in... overall the USPS does a great job for the price. Of course there are other businesses that may provide service with more dependability... which can be debated pros and cons... but certainly the cost is greater.
And yes... I've had USPS screwups and items lost before. Cost of doing business in an uncertain world.
No. It is at a different P.O. that is 15 miles away.
Is there any realistic alternative to the usps? It would be great if FedEx offered a low-cost alternative but I doubt they're equipped to handle the volume that would result.
I have a dilemma w.r.t. outgoing mail. If I take it to a collection box it's customarily two full days before the usps acknowledges receipt. That makes me look very bad as a seller. I generally get better results leaving outgoing items in my own mailbox (I tip my carrier lavishly) but I never know when the substitute is on duty and they never scan anything.
Separately, we've had a dramatic upswing in mailbox (and porch) thefts these past two years where I live and you can buy all the insurance in the world but it's money down the drain if receipt isn't acknowledged. I've read online that the solution is to drive to the post office and wait in line but that isn't remotely practical for me.
Any useful advice would be appreciated but please skip the gaslighting. If your experience with the usps is great please accept my congratulations. I'm not even going to get into recent experiences with trying to locate missing parcels en route!
Like anything it is according to where you live. Fedex here is the absolute last agency to use. I have had so many packages lost and one at the warehouse where I took it to get a delivery error corrected. Luckily, my lost packages were all something I could reorder and not a coin. My P.O. and I have had a tangle or two over 50 years but never a lost package sent nor received. UPS is according to the individual delivery agent. I have went 3 or 4 years without a problem and then they change the agent and it goes to xxxx. Now they change the agent every 3rd or 4th delivery it seems. I now request when I can USPS only. For my home I would pay extra to see that USPS handled my package.
I just had Staples lose 3 straight deliveries, the first, the replacement and the replacement, replacement. They decided to save some money and use a service(ha!) called(believe it or not) Letter Ride. After losing 2 in as many weeks, I requested they utilize a different shipping company and they guaranteed me they would, well Let 'er ride won out again and still no package, yet each 3 times it was shown delivered and signed by someone named Jacob. To give you an idea of their quality, I wrote the comany an email from their website to request them to investigate the deliveries and in 10 days since have never had a response. We are in difficult times.

I get small packages from Japan faster than Usps priority tracking in the USA. Latest example Blairstown Nj-Tetterboro NJ-Phillipsburg NJ-Springfield MA-St Paul MN- Harrisburg PA-Phila. PA- New Hope Pa (me!) The automated barcode system is imperfect but redirects. Watching the journey is stressful. Peace Roy

I sent a package to Arizona from Florida once. It ended up in Hawaii, but, eventually made it to it's destination.
FedEx couldn't/ wouldn't offer an alternative. Do you really think anyone can carry a letter from East Bejeesus, Oregon to West Bumchuck, Mississippi for 60 cents?
Aren't the Japan packages carried by USPS?
The USPS is like a box of chocolates. You never know what kind of service you'll get.
Sad but true. I saw it all, and the decline in service as I worked my way to retirement.

The big issue right now is labor shortages. Our mail carriers work their literal behinds off every day... Largely because of Amazon.
It has certainly gotten better since the pandemic started. I find that as long as I'm willing to wait in line (usually no more than 5 min in my town) to get a package scanned in, it almost always arrived without fail. As far as receiving, the delays can be agitating sometimes.

I find it interesting how sometimes I will get a first class package in literally two days from across the country but other times a package from a few hundred miles away takes over a month.
I forgot to add USPS to my list of reasons why coin collecting isn't what it used be.
@jmlanzaf they were airmail until they reached the continental US without a tracking #. Go figure.
