Most Valuable Player Award winner in 1962 for the Dodgers, Maury Wills, has passed away just shy of his 90th birthday. He also led the league in stolen bases for six years in a row.

wow, I hadnt heard. he was fortunate to have lived a full, long life
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
He was a crowd favorite long ago at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers traded him to the Pirates in 1967(?)
I was offered to buy his Pirate jersey for $32(?) A few years later. I didn't do it. I think about that often.....stupid me....
I met a woman relative of his once.....we had a nice talk. He had a few problems along the way......Dusty Baker (?) intervened .....saved his life......
Whenever he reached 1st. base, the chant at Dodger Stadium would begin.....GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO!........
he was a very important part to some great Dodger teams! Seems like only yesterday.......Thanks for the memories!
R.I.P.
GO! GO! GO GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! 😥

Unfortunate he could not outrun father time. None of us will. Regardless, he had a long life and left his mark. RIP.

So is he the last surviving 1950s player? On a related note Joe B Hall was the last surviving 1940s UK player.

Apparently the oldest living player from the 1950's (and currently, the oldest living player of any era) is a Yankees pitcher named Art Schallock, aged 98 years, 149 days as of today. Not well known, he played from 1951 thru 1955.
The oldest well-known players are Bobby Shantz and Carl Erskine.
Is there anyway we can find out for example, who the last surviving 1800s player was? Or the last National Association player? And so on?

As far as the Hall of Fame goes, Wills was not an "under-5%-and-you're-out" kind of candidate. His peak year, he garnered 40% of the writers' votes.
