I don't have it in hand yet. Not sure if it's a half cent or Large Cent. It's a classic head type but not sure 1808 or 1809. Not sure of the letters. Either it's a V or A, don't know about the other letter. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
I rotated the image.

The obverse looks like the style of a silversmith hallmark, but it is rather large.
And the reverse would be unusual for a silversmith hallmark - usually they only mark one side.
Interesting. I didn't think about that possibility.
I was thinking silversmith as well. The reverse is very odd.
for the coin detectives, that use paint.net, you can drop an image into it and may have to select the pointer and then just right click and rotate the coin in any direction, at any speed you want.
very handy in situations like this.

All I see is a sundial.
If anyone can figure out what the reverse is supposed to be, it may be a clue to the obverse. I have no idea what it could be. Cheers, RickO
Received the coin in the mail yesterday. It's an 1809 half cent. It was stored in a pvc flip, so I removed it and soaked it in acetone. I then used verdicare and a tooth pick and removed some crud around the counterstamp. I wonder if that is a "J".
Very interesting piece. I need to invest in some counterstamp references.
