You guys heard of the 2008 Alaska, "Extra Claw" variety. But definitely NOT this one!

joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 16,312 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hi guys,
Check this coin out guys. I could not believe this one. Mine is more like an Alaskan Iceberg, instead of a claw! Lol. Is it real or goofed with? And why the gold?
Another thing. Usually, the Extra Claw varieties are on the P mints. Mine is the D mint? :*
What do you guys think? Thanks
Here is the normal, "Extra Claw" on the P mint 2008 Alaska quarter.

Here is the "Iceberg" one!

Oh, and the weight is normal too.
New Discovery, perhaps?
:*

    PMD - it’s added “sludge”

Thanks, Fred, for your assessment. "Added Sludge"? So somebody messing with the coin, you're saying?
Do you know what the Gold coloring is all about?
Also, wouldn't the weight be different? It still weighs normal?

The gold color could be the light reflecting off some kind of glue or gunk.

I hate these "cute" names used to make novices think that minor errors are special and worth a premium. No extra claw was engraved on the die(s). It is nothing more than a minor die chip. The claw area happens to be a weak area on the die and that's why you get small die chips in that area.

Die chips are common on later state quarters and ATBs. By the time the mint figures out where the weak areas are, they can't modify the design because they are making the next quarter. With a small amount of searching, you can find lots of die chips. Why would people want to pay a premium for something coming and minor? Or is it they think others want to buy their rarity with a cute name.

Sorry, just my rant for the day. Now I feel better. Thanks :)

    It's definitively all about marketing.

Wounded eagle, speared bison, spitting pony - where would these die anomalies be without the catchy name?

Along with why the names. Best reason, is probably so one can easily see the comparison ( the name to the abnormality) than one can identify that certain coin. 99% of the nicknames these coins receive are pretty darn close to the actual mishap.
    Ex: speared bison
    Three legged buffalo
Lol. Com' on. That appears to be exactly what it is called.
The only one that is misleading that I know of is the
    1988 p or d, "Wide AM" Cent.
ALL 1988's have the separation in the
    "A & M" in America!

    Acetone soak. Over night

    Results

The Splotch fell off. The gold color remains.
    Yep.

    Oh well,
    Nevermind...
