I have seen worse with the zinc cents. I pick them up off the street sometimes and they are completely scraped off like a train ran over them. You can’t make out any details but can tell it’s a cent by the size and part of the copper plating showing.

They are actually no longer redeemable as I had a few I tried to spend and they wouldn’t take them saying that they wouldn’t fit in a coin roll and machine will reject it due to rough edges. No big deal as it was only three cents but still interesting the damage was so bad it made them no longer legal tender.

This is an example of what one looked like. NOT my photo. Found on google images to illustrate my example.

I see several corroded zincolns in the register tills and I put them in the deposit drop envelopes. Hopefully the banks dispose of them properly.

  • A frequent question on metal detecting forums is “what to do with crusty zincolns”. My answer is to put them in your trash pouch with the rest of the junk for the garbage can. But some of these cheap, stupid SOB’s will sneak them into coin rolls and take them to a bank. They also will take the dirty clad coins they find and drop them in vending machines and then hit the coin return button, which drops a different coin back. Would be bad enough if they had actually bought something with them and supported the poor vendor but instead they just make their problem his problem. Hope I never become that desperate for 35 cents.

Pennies in this condition should be tossed in the trash can.

Which scene in "Jaws 1"? 🤔

By coincidence I watched it recently, although it was originally just called "Jaws". :p

Ah, yes. I remember it well.

I froze a zinc cent in liquid nitrogen over 20 years ago when I was in the navy. I then hit it with a hammer. Just a love tap, not like I was hitting a nail or bellowing like some Norse god. It just shattered and crumbled.

Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.

Here's a Zincoln I found recently. It was scraped, and there are now patches of purple, red and green crystals growing on it... It actually sparkles, but that doesn't show in the photos.

Sometimes I scrape cents that look like these out of the coin star. I spend them on my next purchase. Never a problem. Most cashiers don’t even give them a second look.

  • Well in that case I’m glad I didn’t say ‘eat my shorts dude’ 😂. I’ve only been around here a bit more than a week and wasn’t sure yet if you fellas had a funny bone or not.

Luv this thread. Other than a flat cent off the railroad tracks where you can barely make out the Memorial reverse, haven't seen such lovely pennies before.

@Jzyskowski1 If you need a washing machine coin to go with your dryer coin, I found this one in the washing machine. I know it's not a matching set, but it is a newer model. Your in luck because we are having a scratch and dent sale this month.
