    Unusual? Yes. ;)
It is easy to see why you would think it's a D. ;)
It looks more like plating blisters to me.

  • Interesting, plating blistering, common among the new age cents. And if not for all the other factors around that specific area, I might agree immediately, but with great respect for you and your expertise, I will say having the coin in front of you might change your mind.
Without question, I greatly respect your expertise, I have got little right in this still new hobby of mine and so I know you are more than likely correct. Why do you believe that it's plating issues with all the dig out around the area, so much so that the 9 is malformed? I ask in earnest as I am still learning how much this and golf are both fun and frustrating lol

Thank you for a respectful reply and the ability to keep an open mind. :)

"if not for all the other factors around that specific area"
"Why do you believe that it's plating issues with all the dig out around the area, so much so that the 9 is malformed?"

There appears to be some die erosion in that area.

"I will say having the coin in front of you might change your mind."

Yes it could or a better full coin photo, but I still think I am right, others will give more opinions.

  • Thank you, I do appreciate your explanation, do you think I should post better pics or as they say just let it go?

Your close ups are great the full coin photos are a little out of focus.
Not sure other full coin photos are needed at this point, wait for other replies.
The coin also appears to show other plating issues on the right side of the D and on the reverse from OF to the top corner of the Memorial.

The close-ups are of a 1987-D from Wexler’s website, do you have close-ups of the date on your cent to compare?

  • I posted the Wexler pictures so fewer would think me crazy lol, I posted some pictures, but at least, I'm learning more in that arena as well. I would be happy to try again though. Thank you for your input, it's appreciated

@2fun2Bbad "I posted the Wexler pictures"

Don't post photos of a different date than your coin, it only causes confusion. :/

  • This image from Billy G. Crawford shows a nearly horizontal D punched into the upper left 9 in the date. This overlay from Billy G. Crawford shows how the D mint mark for the 1989-D cents is a perfect match for the image punched into the upper left 9.
Although this is an 88, the reference was needed to explain what I was seeing, not sure where 87 came into play, but 89 wasn't the first, but it was the last given the changes to the dies forward.

Ya I have to say, the wexler pics really threw me off. If it's only about the full pics, then I'm not seeing it.

The anomaly appears to be plating blisters... In your pictures, I cannot see any evidence that would make be believe it is a D...Cheers, RickO
