August 27, 1776

On this date, in the heat of the American Revolutionary War, members of the 1st Maryland Regiment repeatedly charged a numerically superior British force during the Battle of Long Island, allowing General Washington and the rest of the American troops to escape.
To honor the heroes of the American Revolutionary War, show a coin from the 1700's.

@1630Boston Great looking original chocolate brown coin that's perfect for the grade. That's the way old copper coins should look.

This one I haven’t shown in a while- but I absolutely love it. From the US Mint's first chief engraver:
"Fatti Maschii Parole Femine"
the word coin in the early part of the 1700s really takes on a liberal meaning since colonies BECAME states and their currencies. SO, since i'm not an expert and almost posted and Lord Baltimore since it is listed under Maryland in the PCGS colonial section, i opted not to post it with wording that they were struck in britain? for british colonies, kinda the opposite of what we are going for here. SO, i landed on these after searching for a while. for better or worse. viva la resistance for independence and democracy!

Copper Inimica Tryannis
Description: Heritage Auctions (coin above)
A 12-page pamphlet dated May 13, 1785 was published at the same time as the report in the Journal of the Continental Congress. The pamphlet, Propositions Respecting the Coinage of Gold, Silver, and Copper, is attributed to Thomas Jefferson, and also included the work of Hugh Williamson, Robert Morris, and Gouverneur Morris. That report stated the original vision for the Inimica Tyrannis obverse design:
"An Indian, his right foot on a crown, a bow in his left-hand, in his right-hand thirteen arrows, and the inscription MANUS INIMICA TYRANNIS." (personal observation. isn't an indian with his foot on a crown odd?)
