CRO Newp #2

Last week I posted about a Large Capped Bust Quarter that I got from CRO. In the same order, I also got a Draped Bust Quarter. The thing about DBQ's - when you start getting closer to the year 1800, US silver in worn grades becomes challenging to pick up color and great surfaces. This is particularly poignant for quarters and thus collecting DBQ's in worn grades is not for the faint of heart. You can find all shades of grey easily, but finding them without detracting hits/scratches/digs, in grades G-VF, is hard. When you find good ones, that are strong for the grade, and have some color, well, infrequent is the word. CRO has this ability to find those infrequent ones with great surfaces.

At present, I have 6 1806 DBQ's - VG10 to VF25. Prices start to hit upper 4 figures in XF for great ones, and up up up to higher grades. So if I can, I like to get VF's where I am in a comfortable price range for my budget. The 6 I have are all different die marriages. There are 10 DM's for 1806, the B8 is the toughest at R6. I will show you the 1806 sisters for the CRO Newp as well.

So here is the CRO newp, the 1806 B2 die marriage. Sadly, the quarter is not flush with the top and bottom of the holder and instead at an angle. Why TPG's seem to have such a hard time putting some coins in holders properly, well I just don't get. It would cost me too much to get it into a new holder and correctly aligned, and given the wait times, it might be gone until 2023. Then I would have to send it off again to CAC for a new sticker. So shipping and wait times just too much. But this coin is covered in blue and olive toning, just hard to get it in the image bc of orientation - to do that, you need to put the light vertically over the slab where you would see a nice reflection of the light in the plastic over the image of the coin. This is why shooting raw can capture great toning and why Troo Views are always so nice. Nevertheless, even at the angles I could put the lights, you can see some of the blue tones coming out. Great coin IMO.

This B2 is one of the common 1806 DM's, an R2. This B2 is an example of a Late Die State showing reverse rim crumbling. In middle die states the rim shows crumbling over ED. This continues to extend over STATES, and then the LDS has a cud over O and AMER. The prong gets in the way but it has what looks like the cuds over AMER to go with that over O, particularly at A and E where they should be for LDS. So this is a classic LDS for the DM. Tompkins states that the LDS showing all of the reverse rim cuds is 'very scarce'. I had a B2 in P10 that I replaced with this one that also showed the same LDS, so not sure what very scarce means. Anyway, here it is:

If nice ones come along in my price range, I will try to get the remaining die marriages, and upgrades as well when I can. The 4 DM's I don't have, have rarity ratings from R5 to R6. So I picked up the easy ones, even though 'easy' in CAC is not so easy. CAC reports a total of 195 stickered for 1806, and another 70 for 1806/5 B1. For 1806 there are 43 total stickered in VF, and that is across 9 DM's. So picking up a CACed example in VF for the ≥R5 DM's, gonna be tough. Even in VG-F, gonna be tough. We will see...

So too much writing already so here are just images of my other 1806 DM's. Toning and color varies............

Best, SH

That is a B2 like my CRO Newp#2. Nice and wholesome F12, should sticker if not sent in yet. Notice the broken foot of the T in Liberty on obv., the placement of the base of the stem over A in America on rev. Yours appears to be an earlier die state w/o LDS rim cuds.
