Reholdering Question

I purchased a walking liberty today in an old NGC holder that I think is a potential candidate for either an upgrade with NGC or crossover to PCGS. I have been coached to buy the coin and not the plastic, but pragmatically think there may be an opportunity to benefit by re-submitting. I’d appreciate folks sharing any potential strategies or considerations for how to approach the decision. For example, I’m curious about the benefits of cracking out vs requesting a regrade. I’m also concerned about losing the old NGC plastic which I think some will (rightly or wrongly) ascribe value to. To my knowledge the coin has not been submitted to CAC, judging on the quality and provenance of the coin. Any suggestions or thoughts on how to think about the above considerations and other factors relating to the decision would be much appreciated. Please note, I don’t wish to engage in a debate of coins vs plastic, just trying to be thoughtful in approaching this from a commercial perspective.

Which generation NGC holder is the coin in? That will help answer the question

Show pictures of the coin and holder... I am sure you will receive the information you need. Cheers, RickO

It’s the white core holder from 1987. Will post some pictures shortly.

Depending on the rarity of course, if in fact it upgrades, it would be cheaper if CAC thinks so. Probably worth more with a Gold Sticker

  • If it’s a white label - definitely don’t crack or resubmit. If it’s just a fatty, and the price difference won’t vary wildly, I myself would send to CAC.

I find that older holders can be more valuable than new... So trying for a CAC if you plan to sell may be better option?

If you plan to keep it I'd save the money unless you just want to know if it's a strong grade for sure.

I’m intrigued. Definitely depends on the holder and coin. I have a few fatties and would never crack them. CAC is the only option I would consider. Value of the plastic aside, I just really like the old holders, they have charm.
