Harriet Tubman commemorative coins coming in 2024

WillieBoyd2WillieBoyd2 Posts: 5,185 ✭✭✭✭✭

Legislation signed into law Aug. 3 by President Biden authorizes a three-coin commemorative coin program for 2024 recognizing Civil War abolitionist Harriet Tubman.

The Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Act, Public Law 117-163, calls for the production and release in Proof and Uncirculated versions combined of 50,000 gold $5 coins, 400,000 silver dollars and 750,000 copper-nickel clad half dollars.

Beneficiaries are the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and The Harriet-Tubman Home Inc. in Auburn, New York.

It’s a good subject but the five dollar gold piece is dead dead dead almost no matter what it’s commemorating

I hope at least on of the coins has an action shot with her holding a gun.

Well let's hope this goes better than the Tubman note...

Looks like a coin will beat the bill. A commemorative is way different than an actual currency change though...

Yet another theme of virtually no interest to actual current collectors.

Yikes, that a bit harsh. For some actual collectors it is of great interest and import.

I'm glad they are portraying this very important historical figure on a US coin. Harriet Tubman was a very brave woman who fought for her beliefs at great risk to her own life. She was a staunch Republican, a devout Christian, and a firm believer in the Second Amendment. She advocated that freed slaves should buy a gun and learn how to use it to protect their newly gained freedom. There are even surviving pictures of her holding a rifle. I'm looking forward to buying this coin. B)

I didn't say none and I'm not singling this specific on out. I'd imagine every US Mint issued coin is of interest to a very low minority.

The mintages are the best indication that collectors don't find recent themes or designs very interesting. The recent price increases don't help, but the $1 and clad are nominal expenditures (in isolation) by current standards. People spend this amount on discretionary expenditures, all the time. Congress has over promoted the program, just as they did in the mid-20th century.

I like that motif with the hands holding. I'm imagine that paired with an illustration of Tubman holding a rifle.

I hope they do different designs for the half dollar and silver dollar, and throw in some elements that better represent the Underground Railroad like the Big Dipper in the night sky, safe houses, etc.

United States Mint Announces Designs for the Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Program
    July 24, 2023

WASHINGTON–The United States Mint (Mint) joined representatives from the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to unveil the designs for the 2024 Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Program yesterday during the opening ceremony for the African Methodist Episcopal Zion’s (AMEZ) Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society Quadrennial Conference in New Orleans. The designs will be featured on a $5 gold coin, a $1 silver coin, and a half dollar clad coin, as authorized by Public Law 117-163, in recognition of the bicentennial of Harriet Tubman’s birth. All designs were created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designers and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artists.

I should probably know... But are these actual artists renditions or Computer-Aided Designs from a CAD?

I was really hoping for a Tubman $20. Andrew Jackson hated the banks he would be rolling in his grave to know he was featured on the most common non-gold standard bill. Seems appropriate to give his bill to someone else.

  • Looking forward to these coins.

He also rejected the statehood of florida and sent the troops to squash it because the Native Americans had organized and legally petitioned for statehood.

I’m really hoping these coins won’t look as flat as the 2013 five star generals silver dollar 😳
