NEWPS - Gold Indian Quarter Eagle in an old NCI Holder

mark_dakmark_dak Posts: 1,133 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was offered this one at what I felt was a pretty decent price this morning so I took a chance on it. I've never owned one of these NCI holders with the lousy photo grade sheet before. Yes, the photography is poor at best. If anything, the MS63/63 could be a little generous on this particular coin although not overly so IMO. I'd love some thoughts on the coin AND HOLDER, both good and bad. I'm particularly interested in how you view these type coins/slabs when you come across them. Maybe I can turn my latest purchase into a learning experience for everyone.

    it seems nice

I believe NCI was run by Halperin before starting Heritage auction house.

    Yes it was.

I guess I'm wondering how some of these other slabs are looked at by members when they come across them. If the slab isn't taken seriously, what exactly did I purchase? I probably won't crack it out and most likely nobody else would so did I pick up an uncertified coin? It's kind of unfair to that poor coin inside the slab that lives in coin purgatory forever.

Nice looking coin and a very neat old holder. Assuming you got it at a good price, you did well. B)

NCI, PCI, and a couple of others USED to be quoted in the greysheet. There was a box that said something like NCI coins, 95% of the listed value.

I think NCIs grading was spot-on, but as with most grades of that era, technical ANA standards grading (or the data that went INTO the ANA standards). How does that compare to today's market-driven grades and grade-flation? Anybody's guess.

Sort of like comparing hitting stats from the live-ball and dead-ball eras. We know it is different, but not in any absolute, objective way.

Nice coin... Pictures are tough to judge... Looks like a fair grade. If just for your collection, keep it in the slab.... If contemplating future sale, crack and submit. Cheers, RickO

If I had looked at the coin raw, I would have thought maybe a MS62... so possibly off 1 grade. Same could be said for any of the coins from any grading service I suppose. I don't see many of these when I hit the shows so I'm definitely leaving it as is. No advantage to cross over IMO.

BTW, the included photos were truly horrible. Small, and not very clear.

Nice coin, properly graded. I've seen coins I thought were 62/3 come back in higher grades if original without real problems.

Neat and I forgot they did split grading on the slab insert.

I have some silver ATB quarters that are graded PR70 by NCI. I Have tried to get a value on them, but it is a NO-GO. Haven't had much luck trying to sell them either. My situation is pocket change compared to yours. If you didn't over pay for the coin, you should be OK.

Check that again or post some photos. At best it's a different grading service with the same initials. The NCI we are discussing here closed in 1991.

Nah, @JWP, there is a point where all basement slabbers look alike. You know that blind luck means at least ONE coin is accurately graded, so "Am I lucky? Is this THAT coin?"...
