1924-D Buffalo Nickel
This date and mint are difficult to come by over Very Fine. You see, everyone is focused on the Key Date 1924-S, and the coin is merely glossed over.
Big mistake.
There are no fully struck 1924-D coins. As a matter of fact, I have never found one with a fully struck top feather. Go ahead. Look at as many as you can. The feather is as flat as a crushed can!
If you're trying to collect Buffs, don't look past this one. Try to find the best obverse that you could.
Good luck. This is just another Buff that could drive you crazy.

Well said!
And the ‘25D and ‘26D are almost as bad to find well struck.
@BuffaloIronTail Thank you for the thread ☺️ a gentle reminder for me to get back on my interest ❤️
Some years were not good strike-wise... but then the '38's had a profusion of strong strikes. Cheers, RickO
Here's the one from my set. Weak top feather.

I agree that the 24-d is a tough Buff.
@Picker1954 - Your Buff looks very nice. I just started a Dansco for a secondary set of Buffs where my target grade will be in the xf45/au50 range for most dates/mm. I would be thrilled to find a 24-d like yours.
I would have to say that they are actually WORSE than 1924-D.
But we're not running a beauty contest here......................

The above specimen is a PCGS MS-66.
Look at the top feather.

I checked mine. No tip on the top feather.
You are 100% correct about that top feather. A crunched can is also a great comparison.
Not my coin but the short feather bares a striking similarity to the 24-d. Of course you can find VERY well stuck 17-P buffalo nickels with a well defined top feather. I find it strange seeing how it’s not a high point on the obverse and not the last part of the coin to fill when struck.
@crazyhounddog
Joe. The problem happens because there is too much void to fill because the top feather is directly opposite Black Diamonds head.
Anything less than normal striking pressure and not only the feather is poorly rendered,, but if you look at the horn.........that's also affected.
There is just too much metal displacement between both sides of the coin.
