YN Believes Coins Are History in the Hand

Our latest Young Numismatist feature comes from Timothy Chen, a 19-year-old numismatist from Southern California. He started collecting at the age of 12 after being given a worn 1936-D Buffalo Nickel in change purchasing a Red Book from his local coin shop. He says he "was instantly hooked on learning more about our nation’s history and the captivating stories behind each coin." For instance, holding an 1863 Liberty Seated Dollar that could have been in the pockets of a Union soldier during the Civil War.

WOW, how coincidental. I just mailed a check to this young man today after seeing his coins on Instagram (I don't normally post about a coin before it's in hand). I saw this coin (MS66 that he had crossed from a NGC 65) and felt it is an appealing example for type. He has a good eye. Now I see this article and am impressed. Wish I had it together like him when I was 19. Exciting!

    Beautiful coin!

Timothy Chen has a nice selection which can be turned into a nice pedigree.

It's great that he likes toners and has some nice ones on his website:

This week-long program gave me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet so many talented young numismatists from around the country and to pick the brains of some of the most experienced and knowledgeable instructors in the world. Something that will stay with me […] are the friendships that I’ve made with all the amazing students and instructors who will certainly continue to have an everlasting impact in my numismatic journey. I am so grateful to Seth Chandler, the instructors, and those who donated to this program for supporting me and my fellow peers in this hobby. Without them, this would not have been possible at all.
