This is the first Canadian coin that I have ever purchased. I thought it was just so pretty! The U.S Peace Dollar pales in comparison. It's really an ultra high relief, definitely not stackable.
The coin has three surface textures. The portrait background is matte, the portrait is kind of satin and the ribbon, lettering and maple leaves are mirror like.
The surfaces are very interesting and I'll bet they are really pretty in person.
And the composition is very nice.
But the figure seems a little out of proportion. Specifically the nose.
And then there's the old lady on the other side.
We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last. --Severian the Lame
That is a very nice coin... I like the three distinct texturing. Not sure who is represented, or if it is supposed to be a real person. If not, they could have done better. Cheers, RickO
I agree with this... many wonderful Canadian silver pieces out there and only half the coin is pleasing. Ditch the queen portrait and I'd seriously collect more Canadian designs.
Artistically the US Peace Dollar is far and away better.
The Canadian coin is a great example of technological achievement with the various finishes. The RCM is very good at these sorts of things, although I assume this is a limited mintage issue.
Plus, the US coin shows Liberty promoting Peace. The Canadian coin just shows Peace.

The bust resembles Napoleon Bonaparte. Hard pass.
